Where’s Bill Hartill and the boys when you need them?
Almost 50 years Bill Hartill and a bunch of FAI zealots left the San Valeers Club to form the Southern California Aero Team because they felt that some members of the San Valeers were bending the FAI rules to suit themselves. And that this action did not serve those preparing for international competition. Bill and the boys got a reputation of being abrasive,  hard core and very competitive.
Years later we’re friends with the San Valeers and have mellowed a little on the club membership requirements but we’re still hard core, we still belive in international competition,  we still try very hard to get on the US Free Flight Team, we organized the Americas Cup to raise the standard of International Free Flight across our country, we try and fly in contests in other countries .. and we still follow the FAI Sporting code.
Recently there has been discussion and commentary about what should be in the rules even to the point of confronting other sportsmen on the flying field and/or accusing them of cheating . The incident that comes to mind almost caused an international incident. A few years back a group of sportsmen were preparing for a dawn flyoff in a world cup event in Argentina. A sportsmen from another country with a conservative agenda who had not made the fly off confronted Alex Andriukov, while he was winding because Alex’s helper had handed him a motor from under his jacket. He accused Alex of cheating because his helper had warmed the motor under his jacket. This is matter that could be open to interpretation. However it was not appropriate to confront another sportsman, the correct procedure would have been to file a formal protest. Which the other sportsmen was ‘persuaded’ to do rather than continue the confrontation. I’m not sure what all the others in the flyoff did but I did see Bror Eimar take his motor out of down jacket pocket
As hard nosed and abrasive as Bill and the boys were in the good old days they knew that there are two things to be done. Firstly if another contestant contravenes the rules, pay the fee and lodge the protest. All serious FAI events have a jury, independent of the CD to resolve such issues. I’ve been on the jury in other countries and from personal experience the mix of sportsmen from varied backgrounds have always come up with the right decision. Secondly there is a process through the Team Selection committee to the AMA to the FAI to put in rules proposals. That proposal is voted on by FAI members from many countries. Sometimes we get a decision that we like sometimes one we don’t like, that’s FAI, where the I is for International flying.
The only way to win a World Championship is to fly under the FAI rules, the best way to prepare for that is to fly as often as possible under those rules. That goes with being so hard core.

Fall 2008 AmCup Report

Only 8 more contests left this session but they will yield some exciting end of the year races. Brian Van Nest held the lead for much of the year but Rene Limberger took the F1A lead with the flyoff win of the Northwest challenge the morning of Livotto’s and then won the Livotto’s contest resulting in a total of 116 points. It win be hard for Brian to regain the lead due to the lack of larger entry levels in the remaining eight contests needed for bonus points. 2009 USA team members Lee Hines, Steve Spence and  Ken Bauer placed 5th,6th and 15th.

On the other hand, Paul Crowley has maintained his lead in F1B with 106 points. Blake Jensen has a shot but needs 2 wins—Eloy is good but he has 2 Lost Hills high scores. Same for George Batiuk and Eddie VanLandingham but he could fly at any of the remaining contest to improve their scores.  The sleeper is Alex Andriukov with two 30 point contests. 2009 USA Team members are Alex, Walt Ghio and Charlie Jones at 10th, 20th and 28th.

Good year for Don Chesson currently in F1C 1st and a  USA 2009 member along with Gil Morris(10th) and Dick Mathis (17th). Ron McBurnett, first alternate Matt Gewain, Mike Roberts and Roger Simpson all can make a run for the first place position.

Dave Rounsaville has a fight to keep his first place position with Bob Hanford hot on his tails in F1P.

Tiffany O’Dell is holding on to 1st as well in F1G. Will second place Charlie Jones make a push or start his F1B focus for 2008 Croatia WC?  Brian VanNest and Eddie VanLandingham have credible chance for first as well.

Brian VanNest is also putting the pressure on his buddy, Mike McKeever, first place in F1H. Bonus points are critical here making a slim chance for the rest of us to taking the lead.

Faust Parker has held the F1J lead all year and it’s the bonus point situation again. Unlikely Jean Pailet (2nd), Dave Rounsaville (3rd) will be able overcome Faust’s lead.

F1Q is a close race with Bernie Crowe in the lead but Dick Wood, Frank Pollard and Dan Berry all have credible opportunity to earn 1st place points.

Looks like Peter Brocks takes F1E again this year seeing there are no more contests scheduled for the rest of the year.  Peter is also on the USA 2009 F1E team along with Bob Sifleet (2nd) and Tome Ieorger (3rd).

Off to Las Vegas to see if I can climb into 5th place or better in F1A or H.

As usual, send corrects to via email <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>. Your corrections are key to insure accurate results at the end of the year.

More attempt questions ..

Dear Roger

In the FAI sporting code , section 4 Para 3.2.5 it's written that one of the cases for Definition of an Unsuccessful flying Attempt is: "When a part of the model aircraft becomes detached during the launch or during the flight time."
I flew F1B model in a competition and When I launched my model from my hand, one dihedral separated from the center and folded on the center part of the wing. During climbing he fluttered, hanging on the covering film.My model touched the ground after 45 sec and i did not get a Repeat of an Attempt.
I was told that the wording is very clear, not broke, not deformed but detached therefore I do not deserve another attempt as the part was still loosely connected.
There is no logic to give F1A flyer a second attempt if the timer door fell and in this case not.It is clear that a model can fly without the timer door but not with a folded dihedral yet at the first case the sporting code give another chance to the flyer !!
Another argumentation is that the model's Surface Area become illegal therefor a second attempt can correct the situation...
hope to open a discussion about this case

Don’t deny the majority the benefits of the 20 second rule

I am not sure how we all allowed the use of RC to directly affect the outcome of a contest flight in a free flight event, but it is this that should be addressed, not altering other rules to cater for it.

Only a small percentage of fliers currently use RCDT in contest flights, and I am not sure why the 20 second rule should be deleted or changed in any way for those who want to use RC during contest flights. Reducing the time to say 10 seconds would not always be effective because, by definition, the model is already low to warrant the need for a RCDT

Removal of the 20 second rule would be to the detriment of the large number of other fliers around the world who enjoy the benefits of having a second chance if a misfortune occurs (either of their own making or of someone else’s making) and they do a sub 20 second flight, It would also have to apply to all FAI F/F classes, and right down to club events not just the international ones.

So, I would suggest (excuse me if others have already proposed it) that if you have an ‘active’ RCDT fitted during a contest flight, you forfeit the 20 second rule for an early DT. De-activation of an RCDT would not be achieved by switching it off; removal of an RCDT component from the model would be required.

Not too difficult to police; if someone does a poor launch and then the model suddenly dt’s---!!

So don’t deny the majority the benefits of the 20 second rule.

Regards
Peter Tribe
