As we decorate for Christmas, we think of all our friends far away and the on
es we have lost. Hope we have the opportunity in the coming year to share some
laughter, cold drinks and many good thermals.
Sylvia & I want to wish you Merry Christmas & a very Happy New Year.

SAM Speaks is grateful for the rapid response by so many SCATers to
our request for photos of Bob White. Several of them will appear in
the January issue. There will be more in the March issue and we are
requesting personal stories or anecdotes about Bob White for
publication in SAM Speaks, like we did in a previous issue about
Frank Zaic. We want personal stories because we think Bob is too
significant a person to merely reprint the biographical material that
already has been published. Material may be submitted via email to
.
Photos should be scanned at 300 dpi or more and saved as high
quality Jpeg files. If email is not available, glossy photo prints
may be mailed with typed text. No inkjet prints please. Mail to
Bruce Augustus, 133 Willow Road, Hailey ID 83333. Email is vastly
preferred and handwritten material is not acceptable. Photo credit
will be given and photos will be returned if requested. Deadline for
the March issue is 20 January 2006. Thanks for helping preserve the
memories. BA

THANKS Bob and Ried on "One Design." I have a Miwest Fubar kit since I was
searching out Midwest kits for "Stoop" and his museum for Midwest kits. He
did not live to recieve this one. I contributed many others for him. He is
sorely missed, especially for the balsa raids and the accompanying powered
sailplane rides he was generous enough to provide me and other friends of
his. He and Simmers both had Fourniers in the hanger and Stoop had a side by
side German job, Schwitzer I believe. That was my favotite with the
retractable engine and prop. He let me fly it once we were up. You had to be
a super pilot to get in and out of his tiny airstrip with telephone lines at
one end and a hanger at the other. I never landed or took off. Oh the Fubar
is for Early Nostalgia or plain Nostalgia? You mention it both ways.

I have the same problem, as I also made a simple one-function DT timer
that weights less than 4 grams ready-to-fly (picture here
http://www.helsinki.fi/~linkosal/timers.htm ..., and also in FFQ #15).
Although I dislike programming timers by pushing buttons and counting
flashes, so my timer uses external programming device just like it's
bigger brother does.

The alternatives? Zit actuator is not actually very complicated, it is a
standard solenoid, with copper coil around mild steel core, pulling
another piece of steel to it and releasing the arm to release a lever.
Still building one would require some fiddling and testing. Some timers
use heating a piece of wire to cut through a rubber band. This is light
and elegant, but the drawback is that one would need to use a larger
battery - I doubt that the 20mAh LiPo that I planned to use in my timer
would give sufficient current. The third option is a servo, but these
either weight 3+ grams or are darn expensive, and anyway quite an overkill
for a single function. Servo motors are quite small, but also weak, and
would require gearing to give reliable release... So if you come to think
of any neat solution, please let me know too :)

Hi Ed,

Bill Vanderbeek asked me to draw up- the Mini Pearl and the Hydro Star for
the NFFS "one designs" for next year's Nats. I did so and sent the electronic

files to Bob Holman so that Bob could laser-cut short kits. Both plans and
short kits are now available, although short kit pricing isn't yet available.

Either plan is $7 plus $1 shipping.

I also have all those other "one design" models Reid mentioned, including
the Starduster X, the Zero and the 1/2A Fubar. The "X" and the Zero are $7&
$25 for plan and short kit and the Fubar is $6 and $15. It is reasonable to
assume that the Mini Pearl and the Hydro Star short kits are each going to be

in the $25 ballpark.

Not mentioned by Reid was the slightly earlier "one design," Cunningham's
"Space Rod." The Space Rod also goes for $7 & $25.

Incidentally, slightly off the subject, I also have the plan and short kit
of that Bob White Diamond Stick which George Schroedter mentioned. ($8 & $9
for p & sk, plus shipping.)

Meeting Bob White...

George,

Thanks for your note in SEN on meeting the Godfather.
I met him at Lake Elsinore in 1970, as I came back to
building and flying built-up FF gliders, after doing only
indoor and outdoor HLG during the 60s.
He invited me to join the MaxMen soon, where I learned
that he was on the USA Team bound for Sweden in 1971.
From then on, until he was crowned F1B World Champion
in 1987, he seemed to always be flying in the World Champs.

Like you said, you know the rest of the Bob White Legacy.

It was a pleasure flying with you, RPW.

Ciao,
Leeper
