To all Freeflighters that have been waiting for another
opportunity to fly in a contest just to see how your airplane thermals
above you while you reel up your towline, get on your motorcycle, or
clean the gas of you hands from the previous launch. Its been a while
since We have dragged out that trailer and strapped on the old dirty
motorcycle for another venture at the field. I have missed hearing the
sound of geared motors screaming into the sky, the sound of Steve Spence
giving it what for as he launches his Stamov model 40 feet off the
towline, and the sound of all those props starting at the end of their
intended delay. I have missed the sight of people flapping on their
motorcycles trying in one last desperate attempt to burst something loose
on that desolate ground to raise their airplane into that blue sky. I'm
Thrilled to be able to start taking out those towlines and stretching
them just to feel as though your slightly involved in free flight without
actually competing. I thought after participating in the Jr. World
Champs I would appreciate a nice break from the sport. Fortunately it has
had the completely opposite affect. I can't stay away from it. I just
count down the days until the first contest of the year in Arizona. I'm
sure there are more of you that think like me out there. People who just
consider themselves so fortunate to be able to be involved in a sport as
incredible as freeflight. To all of those who think like me, i salute
you!

Fly max win

2002 America's Cup

This year lacked none of the excitement and suspense of previous years,
and consistent with the history of America's Cup, excellence was the key to
even making the top five in all six events. In five of the events,
at least one win was required for even 5th place, and in allevents, three
to four victories were required to take the Cup home.

In F1A, Brian Van Nest and Steve Spence were at it right out of the chute,
taking spectacular wins early on. They see-sawed back and forth until the
end of the year, when Brian sealed it at the Arizona Champs for his second
year in a row. Third-place Martyn Cowley once again mounted his late season
charge, scoring his first points in October. He nearly took it all but for
a 1-second deficit in the 7-min fly-off round to Brian at the Arizona Champs.
Don Zink put in a year of steady performances to tie Martyn for third, and
Tzvetan Tzvetkov, scoring in nine contests, placed fifth.

This year in Wakefield, perennial Bent-Box award winner Dick Wood traveled
about the country, scoring in 15 contests! His main complaint is when contest
dates are simultaneous, and he can't fly at all of them! This year,
perseverance paid off handsomely, in the winning of the Cup by 4 points
over John Clapp, who mastered the eastern contest sites for second place.
Recently retired and now starting travel the circuit, Walt Ghio put in some
brilliant performances to take third, while John Sessums won fourth,
including a win at the Magnificent Mountain Men, a very tough venue indeed!
Bob Piserchio went on a tear after his successful performances in Hungary
and France to take fifth place.

FAI power is never without its excitement, just watching those engineering
marvels gain hundreds of feet in five seconds. Bob Gutai drove the wheels off
his van, traveling all over the country and scoring in 10 contests. He
required four victories to squeak past second place winner Faust Parker by
one point! This makes two years in a row for Bob. Henry Spence joins his
son Steve once again on the podium with a solid third place with 2 victories
and 2 second-place finishes, beating Doug Joyce also by only one point.
Andrei Kirilenko was close behind for fifth place, winning two contests in
the process.

The mini-events have become more hotly contested in recent years, usually
by former or current open event fliers, and all three events this year have
born this out.

In F1G Coupe, seventeen finishes of fifth or better including four firsts
left Dick Wood one point short of victory, as Tom Ioerger became champion
with four victories and one second-place finish, all on bonus points. Well
back was Ralph Cooney, still a solid performance with three victories,
leading fourth place winner Jack Emery by just one point. Fifth place was
won by sometime glider-guy Peter Brocks.

F1H was by far the hottest event this year. Martyn Cowley was bound and
determined to get the cup back and resume his place at the top of the hill,
in a solid performance over the entire year. He was only one point ahead of
2001 winner Bob Sifleet until putting it away at the Arizona Champs. Bob
finished second. Third place winner was Mike McKeever, who has gotten back
into free flight with a vengeance. The three top finishers shared eleven first
place finishes! Fourth place was a tie between east-coaster Vic Nipper
and Brian Van Nest, both of whom requiring big firsts get there.

Bob Gutai made it a sweep as Champion of F1J power, besting three
outstanding finishes by second-place winner Ed Carroll. Norm Poti's two
first places and one second brought home third, while Texan F1C power
maverick Faust Parker took fourth place. Perennial east coast flyer Jean
Pailet brought home fifth with four second-place finishes, a very respectable
performance indeed!

The honor of placing in the Top Five and the honor of Champion will be
celebrated at the America's Cup banquet on Saturday, 15 February at the Wasco
Valley Rose Country Club. As usual, signup for the banquet is via entry to
the 2003 MaxMen / George Batiuk. See SEN Jan8 2003, issue 770 for entry
form / AmCup Banquet sign up. This year the main course will be stuffed pork
chops. Please contact Jim Parker if you prefer a veggy
plate or chicken.

Thermals, Tom Coussens and Jim Parker

P.S. Anyone that tosses their MA magazine, Please bring Feb 2003 copies to Los
t Hills. We need the 2002 Slovika Jr W.C. articles for grandparents and other
potential Jr FAI families.

Concerning the request for info on Dick Mathis's Bounty Hunter design,
contact Edgar Seay, Sr. at M.A.L. hobby shop in Irving, TX (972) 438-9233.
Edgar kitted this design for Dick back in the late 60's. I talked to him
yesterday and he still has plans and may even kit one up for anybody
interested.

Making a Post on SEN - and Bounty Hunter Info

Hello Roger,

Regarding SEN for 8 January 2003, I would like to respond to "dieseldon"
regarding the Mathis Bounty Hunter, but I am not sure how to do it. As
of today I am registered. After logging on, do I click on the Comment
button to make a post?

[Roman - do what you did and send mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.]

BTW, the September/October 1965 issue of American Modeler presented a
construction article for the Bounty Hunter. It was a 1/2A with a
projected wing area of 391 sq. in. that weighed 7.5 oz. ( Hmm - a little
stretching of the wing to increase area to 403 sq. in. and it would
qualify as an F1P). The wing and stab featured what Mathis called
birdcage construction, which was claimed to be " easiest and fastest
according to those who have tried it."

If memory serves me (and it does so less and less every day!), Fast
Richard's "Bounty Hunter" was also published in Flying Models. If indeed
it was, you can probably still get the plans through Carstens plan
service. My best thought is to go to the Flying Models web site (use
Google and type in Flying Models) and send a query e-mail to Frank
Fanelli. In the meantime, I'll check my stash of model mags to see
whether or not I had a brain cramp.

Pitch your blades
=================

Dear Mike

I can't agree about the idea of prop blades with no pitching moment. It
seems to me that this is the one case where the moment is no problem. We
don't have to worry about the 'stabilty' of the prop blade. At least not at
the velocities involved. It might be important if a moving moment caused
structural damage I guess.

For me the only criteria is the fact that it is a quasi wing, as you say.
This means the same parameters apply. ie a high CL/CD and this is best
provided by using an optimum thickness/camber for the conditions involved.
Something along the lines of B6356 is the obvious choice, for rubber at
least. Note I quoted CL/CD. CL1.5/CD is not applicable for prop blades.
Any other thoughts guys?

Roger,
In answer to 'dieseldon' this design was published in Model Builder in '63 or s
o...
I have the issue but could't find it this morning...it has a monocoupe on the c
over
and ( I think? ) an inset photo of FR and BH...I'll keep looking.
This design was large at 416 WA, hi thrust and birdcage construction. It was us
ed
VERY successfully by Jack Nix ( Sky-Scrapers ) and his sons all thru the 60's
to fill up their trophy cases!!
I met Dick when I was flying his Head Hunter design at the '70 Nats in Glenview.
We formed a great friendship that lasted awhile and I have a ton of great stori
es!
Ironically I just picked up a BH kit at the collecto at the recent King Orange.

F1P Program Feedback
=======================
Biggles

F1P = Production:

F1P a new event for Juniors ? No ! Make that a new event for
manufacturers ! All those young lads diligently working on building
their own F1P models to the rules as published after the March 2002
CIAM meeting, can now throw everything in the trash. Because in fact
we now learn that they will be competing head to head against factory
built models, beyond the means of any normal junior schoolboy of
their age, limited to the typical income from a paper round ! This
is because the "revised" rules now published in the January 1st 2003
FAI rule book have been modified to eliminate the Builder of the
Model rule 4b B.3.1. !

So why doesn't the 4 year rule freeze apply to F1P ? Is this a
provisional FAI event ? Can that be, if F1P is already designated a
"World Championship" event for 2004 ? And if such "re-writing" of
the rules after they have been published and circulated is
"permitted", then what other F1P rule changes can we expect to see
slipped into the rule book before the opening of the first round of
competition ?

Nor is this to be a "simple" model event. Even though some
"technology" is specifically prohibited, limited (at this time) no
engine brakes, tuned pipes or reduction gears, other technologies are
by their very omission from these rule restrictions effectively being
encouraged. Maybe this is a good thing, to encourage fierce
competition and sophisticated design innovation by the manufacturers
? Certainly there is nothing to prohibit a folding wing (one change
of incidence from negative to positive without changing camber) nor
flappers (one change of camber without changing incidence) even if
the transition may not match the elegant control of a bunter who
cares after a 10 second motor run ! Perhaps the one change of
incidence permitted could be used for the propeller during the climb
as used by F2A engines during vertical maneuvers ?

All the existing power flyers are probably expecting to see an F1P
model that actually looks like a power model. But we already have
events for models that look like that don't we. Instead, these oddly
worded F1P rules, limiting span, "wing" area (but not tail area) and
weight, may lead to other innovative non-traditional configurations.
Consider for example some of the other span-limited events, such as
F1D, F1L and P-30, where huge stabilizers which approximate tandem
wing configurations are the norm. And a power event without any wing
loading specification rules as currently written, could result in
giant area, low aspect ratio, lightly loaded models.

It's just a pity there won't be a throng of Juniors there to see them !

[On the FAI web site there is a new version of the sporting code - refernced by Biggles.
I did not that there is a typo ? as at one part it says
there are 5 rounds and another 7 ?]

F1P flyoff ?

Re: F1P
Roger, when you printed the rules for the F1P event, nothing was included
about flyoff flights. Do the rules include flyoffs? If so, what are they?
I have an F1P ready to fly as soon as the weather turns better. Easy to build
and, I hope, easy to fly.
Thanks in advance.

Classic category, in A using the MP Jet, and in 1/2A,
with tuned P.A.W.,.8cc "stinkers",and would welcome
contact with any AMA, or Nostalgia, competition minded
(or sport model, for that matter)) diesel fliers to
exchange ideas, techniques etc. Thanks in advance,

Subject : Re: SCAT Electronic News 8 January 2003 issue 770

With the recent efforts of the West Coast clubs, I think that F1P is now
getting the attention that it will probably deserve. When I read that
the infamous "Hardly A. Brokenspar" asked about the rules, I knew we had
made it! Then, in the same breath he is talking about twisting rubber
bands, I got confused....

We need to somehow get more information out on what is being designed. I
have a simple 3 view of what John and I constructed. I also have the
Pop-Up plans from my friend Gil Morris. But, I know that there are more
lines being put on paper. Even if these haven been built, it would be
excellent to be able to see these and compare notes. We all have
different ideas on what would work, and now is the time to see what is
out there.

In the last SCAT edition, someone asked about Fast Richard's designs.
This suddenly brought to light that the Bounty Hunter can easily be made
to meet the 405 sq inch numbers, with very simple construction. I had
built allot of bird cage stuff in the olden days and it still would
work! The built up fuselage and high thrust could make an interesting
design. Hi thrust stuff tends to get rid of the delicate launch
characteristics of low thrust, small pylons. It is all balsa and as easy
to build as a Mini-Pearl. Heck, even a Mini-Peral could easily be done.
Hmmmm, may be I'll have to fire up AutoCad and see what could be
designed. I could even see Dave Rounsaville building one. A very good
friend of mine built a bigger Bounty Hunter with a Cox .09 and it trucked.

So, let's see if we can come up with a method of easily transfering 3
views of what is being done. If they could be commuinicated thru SCAT,
it could be of benefit to all...

F1P in contest

Roger, in response to your question as to when should F1P be scheduled,
during the major events or mini events.

I realize it will be each CD's call as to when he wants to schedule it,
but my take is/was, during the mini events. Rationale is based on two
things. First, the major events have longer maxes, get higher and go
further. So there is the time needed to retrieve them that must be
factored in. The second thing is that the most major events competitors
are concentrating to hard on their event to put in the flights of a second
event. So the time needed for retrieval and the intensity of the
competition warrants the placing of F1P with the mini events.

I would also like to add as a suggestion, is to try the way that F1P was
scheduled at the Autumn cup. Because of the desire to get competitors
introduced to the F1P event with out them saying I just don't have time
for another event, we did not schedule F1P to be flown by rounds. That way
when a competitor has time to squeeze in a flight or 2 during the day he
can do it. It also gives them the capability to get his flights in early
in the day when there is little drift. Fly offs begin at the same time as
the mini events. I believe this approach gives competitors a chance to be
introduced to the event without having to sacrifice a current interest.
When more flyers start flying the event, then schedule the rounds. Would
this approach work at the World Cup events such as the Max Men 14 rounder
or the Sierra Cup with an international mix of competitors? No, and if I
were the CD of a competition of that nature I would not even consider it.
But I do believe that it is a solution worth attempting as the F1P
competition begins here in America.
