USA Junior Team Selection Program
=================================

This document is a simplified version of the AMA form. Some information
has been removed. The original form is on the SCAT web site and can be
obtained from the AMA.

2004 USA FAI JUNIOR FREE FLIGHT TEAM SELECTION PROGRAM (JRTSP)

MISSION STATEMENT

The junior team selection program exists to provide a substantial
opportunity to young Free Flight modelers who have demonstrated a high
degree of interest in the sport and the willingness to continually
improve their flying skills and the performance of their models. They
must demonstrate a degree of proficiency of competing with their models
without direct adult involvement. The purpose of this program is to
provide a fair process of selecting the Junior Free Flighters to
compete in the Junior FAI Free Flight World Championship currently
scheduled for the summer of 2004 in the France.

1.0 Program Entry

-A participant must have a current AMA membership.
-Any person who will be under the age of 19 throughout the
entire calendar year of 2004 is eligible.
- Before points in America's Cup Contests can be posted,
participants must send a program entry application (Form A) for
the Junior Team selection process to the AMA. The application
should be postmarked on or before July 26, 2003 to the AMA).
These requirements are needed to facilitate the recording of
scores and the planing for timers at the pre-Nats selection
contest. There is no monetary charge for Junior Team selection
program entry.
-The AMA license fee and any contest entry fees are the
responsibility of the entrant. The events to be flown are F1A
Nordic, F1B Wakefield, and F1J (P) Power.
Note: The notation ''F1J(P)" indicates the
uncertainty at the time of writing of which event
will be flown at the 2004 Junior World Champs. This
program assumes F1J will be flown. If this is not the
case, then the flight times and other minor changes
will be made and communicated to all interested
parties as soon as possible.

2.0 Junior Team Selection Committee

The Free Flight Team Selection Committee (TSC) will govern the
Junior Program. The TSC shall appoint a Junior Team Selection
Committee (JrTSC), which is to be composed of three or four
adults. The JrTSC members will hold the following positions at
a minimum: Administrator, Manager, Scorekeeper and Fund Raiser.
It is also desired to have one JrTSC member in the East,
Central and West part of the country. Interested individuals
should contact the JrTSC Chairman after the proceeding Junior
World Championships.
Team Selection

The USA Junior FAI Free Flight Team Selection Program (JrTSP)
for the 2004 World Championships will be based the contestant's
performance in his or her two best 2003 America's Cup contests
and his or her performance at the 2003 Nats. For the purpose of
team selection only, the 2003 Nats score will include time from
a special pre-Nats contest as well as time from the actual Nats
competition. The contestant's final score will be weighted 50%
from the Nats contests and 25% from each of his or her two best
AC contests. The Nats contest can not be use as an AC contest.

Total Points = 50% (Pre-Nats + Nats) points + 25% 1st
Best AmCup points + 25% 2nd best AmCup points
3.1 Ties

The participants finishing position in the 2003 pre-Nats
contest will break ties of the final computed points.

If a tie still exists, then the finishing position in the 2003
Nats contests will be used as follows:
- If a super-max is not used, the regular round times
including any extended rounds (if used) will be used. If a
tie still exists, then the flyoff times will be used.
- If a super-max is used, the regular round times (which
excludes the super-max time) will be used. If a tie still
exists, the super-max time will be used. If a tie still
exists, then the flyoff times will be used.

3.2 Calculation of points.

A max-out (not including super-max or fly-off time) or the
winning time, which ever is less, will represent 100 points. A
contestant's time will earn points in proportion to the time of
that 100-point performance. Points will be calculated by
rounding to the nearest tenth of a point. The 100-point level
will be established using all contestants' (i.e. including the
open contestants) times in America's Cup contests and only the
times of junior fliers in the 2003 pre-Nats and Nats contest.

For the purpose of team selection scoring only, time from the pre-
Nats contest will be added to time flown in the Nats event (super-
max and fly-off time excluded). Points earned at the Nats will be
calculated using the combined times of the pre-Nats time and the
Nats time.


3.3 Minimum contest requirements for America's Cup points.

In order for points to be included in the JrTSC program, a
minimum of five rounds and a max-out minimum of 15 minutes for
F1A and F1B, 10 minutes for F1J must be flown.

3.4 Minimum performance level.

Each participant selected for the team is expected to achieve
at least 80 points out of the possible 100 points in the final
scoring.

3.5 America's Cup contests

All America's Cup contests for the year 2003 may be used to
earn points in the JrTSC program.


3.6 Pre-Nats Contest

On Sunday, before the start of the 2003 Nats, a special junior
selection program contest (pre-Nats) will be held. The start of
this contest will be 8:00AM and seven one-hour rounds with three-
minute maxes (5/2 for F1J) are planned. No flyoff will be flown.

3.6.1 Special restrictions and conditions at the pre-Nats Contest

The intent of the pre-Nats contest is for the junior participants
to demonstrate their flying skills and proficiency. Adult
involvement will be limited and individual pole positions and
timers will be assigned.

- Access to the flight line will be limited to juniors and
officials only. An area near the junior flight line will be
designated for adult viewing. Junior participants shall not
receive outside communication while on the flight line or when
towing in the case of F1A. If outside communication is deemed
by the Contest Director (CD) to have potentially influenced a
flight, the CD will void the flight in question and a re-flight
will be given. However, additional time will not be added to
the round.
- The junior participant may leave the flight line and receive
help from non-program participants.
- No special restrictions or conditions will apply during the
actual Nats event.

Official team designation.

The top three junior flyers will then be required to complete
the AMA team membership agreement form, which will be sent from
Lisa Johnson at the AMA. The final announcement of the junior
team will then be made for the 2004 Junior World Championships.
It is the prerogative of the JrTSC not to select a full 9-
member team as deemed appropriate due to the qualifications of
the applicants per paragraph 3.4 and/or funding constraints.
The JrTSC will also maintain the authority to place late
entrants in un-contested Junior Team positions.

4.0 Team and Travel Requirements

Team members must have before traveling a current NAA membership
and a passport for both travel and to verify age as required by
FAI regulations.
The Academy of Model Aeronautics requires that all minors have a
parent or a legal guardian with them during the Junior World
Championship trip. A legal guardian must have documented power of
attorney and commit to travel with the minor and be responsible
for the minor for the entire trip. The Junior Team Manager must
submit to a background check in compliance with AMA regulations.
The Junior Team Manager has the discretion to accept or not to
accept the legal guardianship of a minor if so requested.

5.0 Financial Requirements

AMA will provide up to $700 for travel to and from W.C. per team
member and up to 900 Swiss Franc for WC entry fees and room and
board per team member. Donations will be sought to offset any
additional costs of travel and competitions. However, it will be
the responsibility of the team member to pay for any additional
costs if donation funds are not available.

6.0 Certification of Models

Team member's models must have an identifying voucher on the model
and a Class F Aeromodels Specification Certificate filled out per
the FAI Sporting Code for each model. Vouchers and Specification
Certificates are available through AMA Headquarters. The team
member's models must also have "USA" and the flyers AMA number on
the upper surface of the wing(s) as specified in the FAI Sporting
Code. Other regulations are as specified for that model type in
the FAI Sporting Code must be certified on the voucher.

Just a short note from an old Luddite type modeler
that likes things simple. If the new F1P class is for
the juniors why don't they allow .074's so the Big Mig
.074 could compete which is cheap and why are they not
going with the builder of the model rule.

Seems like the factories can now churn out models with
Cyclon .061's on the front end and then how can you
call this an event to groom juniors.

Why not keep it simple and use the builder of the
model rule so the models would stay simple and allow
an engine size that could come closer to competing
with the cyclons?

Ubfortunately we, USA had very little if any input in these FAI rules. The
reality is the europeans drive the FAI ship. Our choice is to compete or
not. My hope is the AstroStar will introduce some AMA FF families to the Jr
FAI program. Atleast the F1P can also be flown in class A. I'm very excited
to see how this program will pan out.

Bob Vannest will be making 10 Astro Star 404 kits that will be given to
desirving Jr flyers. We'll also be giving the 6 Cyclon for those wishing to
go the higher tech route. I'll be putting out the final program next week.

Seelig Retires

Well, the end of Seelig Timers has finally arrived. As of Jan. 17, 2003 at
2:07 pm the last Seelig timer of any kind available has been sold.
Any orders received from this point on will not be filled.
The reason for the shut down is two-fold. 1. Mr. Seelig is retiring, and 2.
The music box industry has gone all electronic and the parts manufacturers
will not be making music box parts in the future. Unforunately, music box
parts are major components in Seelig Timers/
I will try to keep the timers running as long as I have the necessary parts
to do so. How long that will be is not known. If you have a repair request,
please call 530-757-6058 to see if it can be done.

Re Biggles F1P comments in SEN 772:

1) factory models. The intent of the rules, specifically features such
as low aspect ratio and limited functions, were intended to reduce the
advantage of factory built models. You don't need hi-tech to produce a
wing of this type. Obviously a factory one will be better but it should
not be so much better that it eliminates home-built models.

2) Builder of the model rule was excluded from the start, nothing has
changed in the published Sporting Code 2003. See the minutes of the
March 2002 FF technical meeting and CIAM Plenary meeting.

3) The mention of five flights in the classification paragraph 3.P.8.a.
I acknowledge that you have found the error in my cut and paste from the
F1J rules! Para 3.P.3 which specifies the number of flights is correct
at 7 flights.

4) I fail to understand how a folder could be an option to consider. In
all flight configurations you have to meet the minimum area and maximum
projected span rules. If you reduce to less than the maximum span, then
you would have to increase wing chord to meet the area rule. This would
mean you would have more than the minimum area in unfolded state and
also a lower aspect ratio than the basic model.

F1P Development and F1P Competitions

It seems to me that for all the discussions on F1P design
development and a Junior F1P flier development program, we are
overlooking the vehicle that will get the entire F1P event moving and
keep it moving forward. An obvious answer is at our fingertips, the
solution is easily obtainable and deserves consideration and immediate
action. All 2003 America's Cup contests that schedule F1J must allow
F1P models to be flown, using the 10 second motor run/3 minute max for
the F1P models, 7 second motor run/2 minute max for the F1J. Fly 5
rounds. All F1J entries have their score multiplied by 1.5 after the 5
rounds are flown. All models who maxed out, fly against each other in
the flyoff going for identical flyoff round times, with the F1P having a
10 second motor run, the F1J a 7 second motor run. Is that a fair
flyoff contest you ask? No, probably not, the modern F1J with their
high aspect ratio wings and small stabs will climb just about as high
(or even higher) and most certainly will outglide the F1P's with their
max aspect ratio of about 8.2:1, and most of the 2003 F1P's will
initially have flat bottom wings (quick to build during initial
development) built out of balsa and tissue and will have 20 - 30%
stabs............ not conducive to high climbing........, (oh, but wait
until the 2004 designs evolve!).......

BUT, please realize this................. this will get newly developed
F1P models into competitions where performance can be compared,
measured, refined. And realize this as well, your F1P design and
development will be done by experienced power fliers, and if there is no
initiative for these fliers to develop the F1P models, no contests for
the F1P event, then it just isn't going to happen, no matter how much
you talk about it. Talk is cheap, let's do something. This will get
the F1P event on it's feet during 2003, how it would be handled for 2004
can be reevaluated following the 2003 flying season.

John Loribecki wrote in an email discussing getting Junior fliers
qualified for the Junior Team using F1P models, he said, how do you get
a young flier qualified with a F1P model if there are no F1P contests,
and......... no F1P model designs available. People read John's comment
but it seems they ignored them.

Another thing needs to be realized, F1P is not just a Junior event. It
is an international formula class for all age groups...... it just so
happens that the CIAM has designated F1P to be flown as an event at the
Junior World Championships, just as they designated F1J as the
replacement power event for F1C several Junior World Championships back.


Can we stand up and give the F1P event the serious attention it needs,
we have 4 clubs committed to furnishing engines to worthy Junior F1P
competitors, let's commit to the scheduling of F1P contests and to the
F1P design development that everyone is TALKING about. If the SCAT club
will allow the F1P models to be entered and flown in the F1J event at
all America's Cup contests, and if all of the America's Cup contest
organizers pitch in and make it happen we can develop World Class F1P
models for our own competition use as well as for the Junior fliers to
fly in the 2004 Junior World Championships.

Note 1. The CIAM is combining F1J (with a 7 second motor run) and F1P
(with a 10 second motor run), both models flying 3 minute maxes, into a
single power class at the 2003 Junior European Championships and the
2004 Junior World Championships, so our doing it is not out of line.

Note 2. Scoring of America's Cup F1J event can be F1J only with the
organizer indicating those competitor who flew F1P, or it would be
interesting to score them together and see who finished where. Which
ever!

Note 3. Dave Shirley (of the Sierra Eagles MAC) successfully flew a new
F1P design model (Cyclon powered) this past Sunday afternoon, he is now
looking at building a lighter one and is looking for a contest to fly it
in.




F1P (Standard Class)

In the announcement put out by SCAT/Jim Parker, on the F1P development
program for the Jr. team, there were two class defined for the development.
I did not understand just how the 2 classes were to work. Could this be
clarified please.

The 2 classes I believe, were (Standard) and (Performance). I would have to
believe that the Standard class would be more of an entry level class. And
in the announcement there was a mention of typical beginning class models,
one being the Maverick.

I would like to suggest a good Entry Level Model, that being Tom
Hutchinson's MANITO. The Manito was an .09 ship, and was a scaled up version
of the Maverick. The Maverick has approximately 265 projected sq inches in
the wing and the Manito has approximately 343 sq inches in it's wing.

So how do you make the Manito into a legal F1P ship. The Manito has a 7.5
inch main cord and right at a 50.5 projected span.
If you add 8.25 inches to the span of 7.5 inch cord you come up with a span
just under the 59.065 limit and right at 405 sq inches which meets the
minimum wing area of 403 sq inches. What else would you have to do? Don't
change anything else, just build light. The stab which is approximately 113
sq inches is a 28% stab when the wing is increased in size.

What will the addition of 8 inches of span do the models performance? Well
consider that there have been many Mavericks built with an extra rib bay in
each main panel, approximately 6 inches additional span. And they all went
great. We all saw Steve Spence win many contests including the 14 rounder a
few years ago with his modified Maverick. In fact his model and many others
all adapted very easy to a VIT setup with the additional wing area and the
movement of the CG to approximately 65%.

So how do you get hold of a set of the Manito plans. Well thanks to an old
Air Force Team mate of mine, Jackie Sheffer, I found out that you can order
them from the AMA plans service, (Plan # 288). Jackie sent me a copy of the
plans with the question "Can we make this into an F1P?." Well yes you can. I
believe it would make a great entry level model and the plans are available.
The models is built up very similar to the Maverick and should be easily
kept to a 10 ounce model.
My suggestion to the SCAT Club and Jim would be for them to come up with
incentives and a structured entry level program for the Jr.s. In turn, if
there is an interest in that level of flying, lets schedule a Standard level
class of F1P at our contests.

This letter is to announce a new series of point championship competitions
for the four Texas contests during the 2003 season.

The purpose of the Texas Cup Competition is to foster the development of
flyers and models, and to experience the joy of friendly competition in the
4 central Texas contests. This competition encourages flyers to attend
multiple contests each year in order to win. To this end the following
rules have been formulated.

TEXAS CUP COMPETITION 2003

1. Points are accumulated in these 4 Texas contests.
Spring Cup (Seguin) - April 2003
Tri-City Contest (Seguin) - May 2003
Cloud Climbers Contest (Beaumont Ranch) June 2003
Autumn Cup (Seguin) - Nov 2003

2. Overall Point champions will be awarded in the following categories:
Gas
Glider
Rubber
Starduster- (the NFFS one event design for 2003)
P30
Jr/Sr overall Points

The Starduster-X and P30 events have been singled out as
individual event championships to encourage newcomers to build and compete
in two simple events. Kits are available for both events. The points
accumulated in these events will also be counted towards the Gas and Rubber
Championships awards.

3. Awards - High Point Championship Perpetual Plaques will be awarded at the
close of Flying of the Autumn Cup, Seguin USAF Aux Field, November 2003.

4. Gas Champion - Points can be accumulated by flying and placing in any Gas
powered event at any of the 4 contests in any of the following events.

The Starduster event will be flown with the established one-event rules.

5th Place 5 Points

9. Bonus Points - Bonus points are awarded to the 1st thru 5th place
finishers as follows. When more than 5 competitors are entered in an event,
1 point will be awarded for each competitor over 5. For example, if there
are 7 competitors, each of the first 5 place finishers would receive 2 bonus
points. (Note: for bonus points to be awarded, a contestant must make an
official flight to be counted as an entry in that event)

10. Ties - All ties in each event must be settled by the end of that
contest. Ties for the Overall Championships at the end of the competition
will be broken based on number of 1st places each contestant has won in the
competitions. And if necessary 2nd places, followed by 3rds, 4ths and 5ths
until the tie is broken.

11. Scoring - Results of all events from each contest must be forwarded to
Reid Simpson showing all entries in each event and their placing. As well as
showing Junior and Senior entries.

No folding for Puppies

There is a "thing" that prevents a feasible folding wing and that is the
area rule and span limitations. However, as I've noted before, a flapper
would be an interesting and quite viable alternative to a simple auto-stab.
Because of trim needs the flap angle change would be limited and the c.g.
would have to be moved forward. At least that is my take on it. For a
fancier variation I don't see any rules problem with one method of changing
wing incidence along with its camber. (?) ( I had an experimental HLG that
utilized such a system.)


I wonder if one flap angle change could be delayed and still be considered a
single function change with the other side? It could be done using a single
release function but with a short delay factor added in by using such as a
Silly Putty supported flap-stop on the selected side to delay seating by a
second or so. Might facilitate transition.

F1P thoughts

Quite a few notes on the emerging F1P event have appeared recently, but I'm
not aware of any addressing what seems to me a serious shortcoming that makes
the event not particularly suitable for kids. That is, the light wing
loading coupled with a 10-second run with a hot engine and a 3-minute max
will lead to many, many flights that leave the immediate chase area for most
sites. They just won't DT quickly from high altitudes in strong thermals,
leading to durations in excess of 10 minutes. I suppose that's ok for a kid
who has the support of an adult who can afford to replace lost models or has
good radio tracking equipment. To my way of thinking, the event will only
appeal to those few. I can't think of a more effective way to discourage a
newcomer than to lose a model.

rubber lube

It occurred to me that I've never seen a discussion about the best type of
lube, or the amount to use. I've been making up motors to 29g. and 1 g.
of lube, usually a mixture of soap, glycerine, an KY, or the stuff John
Clapp sells. I break a lot of motors.
Is there a better type of lube?
Is there a lube that would work at less than 1g. per motor?
Fantasy: One quarter gram of Super XX lube, resulting in a significant
gain in energy storage capacity!!

Balsa-Carbon Hybrid Construction

If you want to build a plane as strong as a carbon one, but you can't
get fitting carbon shells, and don't want to make them yourself - Do
you just give up? Better: Do as I did, build your dream - combining
balsa and carbon!

Hybrid 1 (Hy1)

The box spar is the same as in my balsa wings, 1mm top and bottom, and
the box closed with 1mm verticals. The corners of my box spars always
had reenforcing carbon strips. The rear of the wing, is "standard
carbon construction: carbon trailing edge and carbon caps for the
ribs. The caps, however, reach across the box spar to the leading
edge. Result is not quite as rigid as a pure carbon wing, but stronger
than the pure balsa due to the stiffer rear.

Hybrid 2 (Hy2)

The box spar is built from carbon. You have to build up a main spar to
carry the bending loads, which also serves as front vertical. A second
spar as rear vertical may, but need not, be especially strong. The top
and bottom of the box is made from carbon "sheet", which.can easily be
made without special equipment (one layer of 90g at 45°). The rest is
built as Hy1, cap strips crossing the box up to the leading edge.
Result: as rigid and strong as a pure carbon wing.

With Hy1, bottom and top of the box spar carry bending and torsion
loads. With Hy2 this is separated, the spar(s) only carry bending, top
and bottom only serve against torsion.

The weight is similar for both, and not different from a pure balsa or
pure carbon wing. Hy2 is certainly more rigid than Hy1. A little "give
", however, enhances the service life ... think about the strength
needed for a rigid system to avoid failure under shock loads!

Advantage of both: build your dream without regard to the parts other
people offer.

Cambered Prop Blades

M. Segreave pondered the effect prop blades with zero pitching moment. Most
rubber ships use cambered blades. The pitching moment due to camber in the
blades will cause the blades to reduce their pitch angle, the effect high at
launch and diminishing with lowering torque. Blades with symmetrical cross
section would not show this detwisting characteristic.

If the blades are symmetrical in cross section, there is little tendency to
twist due to torque as long as the hinge point is at the quarter chord or so
of the blade. But then, symmetrical blades cannot generate the component of
lift that produces the thrust anywhere like that of a cambered blade. Modern
F1B blades are cambered and have great stiffness and probably do not untwist.
Wooden cambered props are another story.

Since we depend on the 'make it and try it' method for improvement,
experience will show the way and I suspect it already has done so.

Now, if we put a Gurney flap and a small leading edge flap on the symmetrical
cross section prop...
