I had a request to find out if the Arden .19 is legal for Nostalgia. It
would seem that it should be, but it is not in the book. Does anyone
know if it is or if not, why?

Roger:
Regarding the inquiries about the current status of the John Pond Plans
Service. This service was recently purchased by AMA and will be made
available via AMA services in the future. I understand that the plan masters
themselves need a fair amount of work to bring them back to useable
condition, so the plans may not be on the market for awhile.
FYI: NFFS attempted to purchase these plans but AMA came in sooner with more
money than we could raise.

I was sorting through some old files that I had kept since
my teen years, and behold, there it was, "Models on the
Fly", by William B. Schwab and Joe Elgin. Dick Korda was
also one of the pranksters that must have driven the Detroit
hotel
manager 'buzz' crazy!
The magazine and date were cut off to mount in my kid scrap
book of, to build later projects. I am reasonably sure it
came from M.A.N. in the forties.
The article gives the history of what led up to this thrifty
harnessing of power. There are 5 full size plans,
photographs of models with flies attached. Tractors,
pusher, tandem, biplane and even multi buzz power; which
presented a problem of synchronization. Indoor flights of
over three minutes duration were recorded, step-by-step
construction is also detailed in the article.
Perhaps there are a few of your readers out there that
would like an alternate to towline, rubber or fuel. If so,
send a self addressed stamped business 10 envelop, and I
will make copies for you to build an alternate horse (fly)
power model that you can construct for about 1/2 cent. Ask
for you free buzz powered 3 page copies of "Model on the
Fly." Be the first kid on the block to O.O.S!

On Nov 30, Dec. 1st there is the last America's Cup and National Cup contest
of the western region for this year in Eloy, AZ. The flier for the FAI

Hi all,
I am looking for the good old great KSBs.
As I know they are not being made for more then a year now.
I am using them for the starter kids F1H models and now even the grupner
company are not building the similar KSB of their one.
Does anyone know how can I get some good timers for this thing?

I have been told that the AMA has purchased the John Pond plan collection and
is in the process of organizing the plans and will be selling copies.
Hopefully they will be available in the not too distant future.

Yes the FAI too. We Brits have the answer to that, of course. Havn't you
been testing the specific energy of the flies?? The latest Hi Tec methods
must be used to have a chance in the Fly Plane WC.
Of course we inscrutable Brits have been doing this for years. We have
been getting still air times of 360 secs plus with the projected new rule
flies, (reduced to only 0.3 gms).
The method is as follows:
Take a length of best 3 mm Tan 2 rubber, (if you have any left), with a
known force at a standard elongation. Glue one of the latest batch of
flies to one end, (using Abroid or Super Glue). The other end is fixed.
Clap your hands and get a helper to measure the stretch of the rubber as the
wretched thing tries to fly away. Make a note of the new stretched length of
the rubber and the elapsed time before the fly drops dead from exhaustion,
(tricky to measure in practice but it can be mastered) .. .. The specific
energy of the fly (EF) can then be calculated from the elongation (m) x time
(secs) x the force on the rubber (Kgs), divided by the weight of the fly (in
Kgs). (Don't forget to subtract out the weight of the glue). We found the
the highest ever EF was from a batch of flies collected in the long hot
summer of 1976. (EF = 1868 Newtons per Kg per sec!!), The top Brits have
large batches of them stored in liquid nitrogen in a top secret MoD facility,
'some where in England', ready to be unfrozen for the WC. Other good
batches were: Aug 86 and Sept 93.
A few boxes (Liquid nitrogen containers) are available to the highest bidder
with a reserve price of $1000 per box of 10, plus $50 per mile for special
air delivery in our fleet of specially refrigerated container aircraft.

price and if you can afford to buy four Russian Wakefields ...........!!!
Note: To get the best energy, unfreeze the flies 12 hours before the comp
and allow them to fly around in large box (at ca 90 deg F), for ca 3 hours,
followed by 6 hours sleep. (similar to pre stretching a rubber motor). This
will ensure the fly's muscles are fully recovered after un freezing which
will give the best results. Of course use any old fly for the thermal
rounds and save the very best ones for the fly off etc.
Oh and don't try pulling any of the wings off the flies, It kills the
performance even more than waiting with a rubber motor for 1/2 hour before
launching. Also the animal rights people will create hell and that could
lead to the death knell for Free Flight. Be warned !!!
