[The Patterson report came with the results but we over looked it
.. applogies to Bogie]

The contest was held November 16 and 17 at the Lost Hills site in California.
We were greeted by fog in the area of the motels just off the freeway to a
rutty entrance to the field site off Holloway Road. Not so foggy on the
field. By contest starting time, the fog had lifted and a slight breeze
wafted the early flyers to the south-west. A little cumulus began to form
and the wind picked up to maybe 5 mph. Temperature required jackets until
10am then shirtsleeves thereafter until the sun was 10 degrees off the
horizon.

Flying the first day was for the F1A, F1B, and F1C. What ho, cried the King
- maxes for all. Daniel did not respond. Extended time was 30 seconds for
F1A and 60 for F1B and F1C. Essentially, the bonus system was ineffective
for the quality of flying and the excellent weather. Seven missed the bonus
time. All three events went to the five minute flyoff. There were so many
180's on the score sheet, we could have made the sheet with all 180's and
pasted over for the misses which were few. Pity the poor Rene Limberger - a
179 most fowl. Winners were Bryan Van Nest in F1A, 24 flying. Walt Ghio in
F1B, 18 flying, and Bob Gutai in F1C, 6 flying.

For F1G, Peter Brocks overpowered the 12 with a 4 minute flyoff max, 12
flying. F1H also had 12 flying with Martyn Cowley besting Bryan Van Nest in
the 7 minute flyoff as the sun danced on the horizon. F1J had three flyers
who all maxed and decided their order of finishing with coin tosses. All in
all, a very pleasant weekend of flying. In addition to this fine flying, two
records were broken - Walt Ghio in F1B and Martyn Cowley in F1H.

Ian Kaynes provided a simple set of rules for managing the supermax.

> If you look at para 3.1.8 in the Sporting Code, it defines classification
as:
> a) total time based on maxes limited to 3 minutes.
> b) if there is still a tie, consider the total from all flights included
extended time.
> c) if there is still a tie, hold a flyoff.

> The extended time thus constitutes a stage of selecting down before a
flyoff.<

Suggestion for all. Copy this and keep it in the tool box for settling
questions with evidence in the future.

HI: Re eligibility of Arden 19 for NOSTALGIA.

It is legal. Please look on Page 9 of current Rule book No. 8 under Bold Type
heading: "Other glow engines" you will read Arden. Plus a list of other
popular engines not specifically spelled out by model identification or
displacement.

Good luck finding one. And if you do, Enjoy!

Bonus time or extended maxes

While reading at the Patterson results, I was surprise to see that the bonus
time - which is the excess above the first three minutes - was counted as part
of the score.

My understanding is that the bonus time only matters for those who have
maxed out, and to settle ties for those who have not. This can be confirmed
by reported contests in FFn.

If the bonus time was accounted for properly, then the final ranking could
change.

For example, in Nordic, Smith, Parker, Cowley and Days placed 15 to 18
respectively. But if one drops their bonus time, as none has maxed, then
the order would be Parker (-118), Days (-127), Smith (-129) and
Cowley (-149), were the number in parentheses is the lost time during
the regular rounds.

Including the bonus time is equivalent to extending the first max by 30
seconds.
Indeed, one of the rule changes circulated by the Team Selection Committee
was to do just this - replace the bonus time by an extended max. But we
don't have to wait for a CAIM sanction, as the CAIM rules only apply to
international contests. With the exception of world cup events, we could
fly all our contest to an extended max.

Finally, whether we use a bonus time or an extended max, the first round should
end early, say within an hour after sun rise. Otherwise, we are rewarding the
late fliers, instead of the fliers whose models fly the longest.

Fly planes

Hi Roger,
Have been interested in the technical discussion on fly planes.
These seem to be the answer for all problems of pollution, aircraft
luggage restrictions and so on.
But they seem suited only to indoors.
In New Zealand we have a very compact Hawk (not the sort advising Mr
Bush over Iraq) but a beautiful thermalling machine.
Perhaps the FAI could introduce new classes based on Raptor wingspans
from our Harriers to the Golden Eagle.
All you need to do is cyno them on to a fuselage.

Roger:
Don DeLoach requested information about the Uranus 1/2A free flight. These
full sized plans are available from NFFS Plans Service. See
for a full listing of plans from this service. Hank Sperzel maintains a large
list of popular free flights from old timer to present day and the prices are
reasonable too.
Check it out.

Can anyone help with a location for Ken Willard plans? Also, I'm .looking
for those old, Cox 4X2-1/2 props that were on .020 engines many years
ago --Don Ross

The Arden is listed as legal under "Other Glow Engines" in the "Eligible =
Glow Engines" section of the NOS rules. It is also eligible by the rule =
which states that all pre 1957 engines are legal.

You can be sure that as soon as someone gets a fly to perform well, the FAI
will limit the flys to one wing and you will not be able to feed them before
flight.

A Flyplane WC could be held at Lost Hills California in October. Contestants
need not bring their own flies as Lost Hills is the fly capitol of the world
at this time. To trap the little buggers you just open any vehicle door for
1 second and close. You'll have 100's trapped in the vehicle. The heat will
slow them down enough to make individual capture easy. Dope thinner still
works well also.
CAUTION: these are starving flies as there is little for them to eat at Lost
Hills, save us modelers, and as any one who has flown there at that time
knows, they have a sharp bite. Yellow T-shirt's are also great attractors
for these hungry little guy's. Due to the lack of fly food at Lost Hills,
the little power plants should readily make the 0.3 gram max weight limit.
Sadly the winning fly will probably never be trapped.
Great Fly-ing to all,
Roger C.

No Flies on Us

Mr SCAT,

In reply to Pete King's item on fly storage and energy
expectations, I feel you are looking at the wrong
species. It is well known that the Rum midge (Rum is
one of the Western Isles off the coast of Scotland) is
by far the most tenacious of all flying creatures and
as such I have followed Pete's method to determine a EF
of 2007 ! There is no limit to the supply of the Rum
midge from my new venture 'Flies 'R Us, Jimmy'. The
summer 2002 stock is available in packets of 1000 and
we are hopeful with genetic engineering that the 2003
Green Batch will be worthy of championship winning
performance. More news to follow .....

FAI versus T-56

Hello, I have been away from FF since
I was a kid. Back then we used a dark grey rubber called T-56. These days I se
e a product called FAI Tan in the hobby shops. Can anyone tell me the pros and
cons of each?
Richard Sheckler

[Richard

Just about anything is better than T-56. Both Tan II and Tan Sport are
orders of magnitude better in terms of ease of energy return and ease of use.

There is no comparison]
