At first glance it would appear that the inequity in sportsman height as
defined by the Aringer/Norton index could be readily corrected by adding
0.01sec engine run for every foot of height that a sportsman gives up to his
competitor.
This overlooks another problem of launching too close to the deck. A couple
of WC's ago, Randy Archer destroyed his #1 model in practice, attributed to
the stab touching down during launch. Brokenspar came to the rescue,
providing a short platform.
This could be an equalizer for all events as the Aringer/Norton index
appeared to correlate in the other events at the WC.
If this comes up short in the CIAM, perhaps that proven method used to award
Scholarships should be employed, ie base the prize on financial need.

This book has many superb photographs of birds (and insects) in flight, and
has a very good anaylsis of the mechanics involved.
Well worth a read.

Regarding the purported rumor about some possible F1E flying at the Issacson
contest in February your sluethful sources were indeed correct. Norm
Furutani & I are now discussing how to have an F1E demonstration during the
Isaccson contest weekend and possibly during the week between the Issacson
and the MaxMen contests in February. Norm will be getting more information
out in the coming weeks about it. While I don't want to feed the rumor mill
I will say that I will be bringing a number of Romanian F1E models that I
brought back from the F1E world champs this past September in Poland so
there will be some real hands on flying for those who may want to try out a
wonderful FAI free flight event which is virtually unknown in the USA but
flown with great gusto in Europe. I will be providing some extensive
information about F1E and getting it out on SEN before the February flying
session. Without letting the cat out of the bag I will mention a few tidbits
about why F1E is a compelling event to consider flying. While you can fly
F1E in the relative calm you can also fly it when it is too windy to fly
free flight. Take an F1E along to a Lost Hills contest and if the contest
gets blown out then go up to the hills and fly F1E. For all you Luddites out
there F1E can be a great event. Since the models are not under high stress
or high speeds you can use use just about any traditional model construction
from spruce, balsa and tissue all the way to the high tech carbon and be
competitive with any of them. F1E is the perfect way to use all those old
F1A wings that are now obsolete and are sitting in your garage collecting
dust. It is the ideal FAI event for those who want to build their own models
as well. Lastly and most importantly I want to assure all of you that F1E is
not a fuddy duddy event flown by a bunch of old codgers who can't wind a
rubber motor. Quite to the contrary it is a wild and crazy group (lots of
juniors were flying at the world champs too!) and as proof I have enclosed a
recent photo from my F1E mentor, coach and inspiration who is from Romania.
Dan Petcu, this years F1E world cup champion helped me for a year in
learning about F1E and has taught me everything I could ever want to know
about the event including how to launch a model from a Donkey. Here is a
photo of Dan showing his true enthusiasm for F1E. We won't have any donkey
launch flying in February but I'm open to the idea if anyone will bring a
tame pet donkey with them.
Seriously, F1E is a great event to fly so watch the SEN news over the next
few months for a report on the F1E world champs this past September and lots
of info on how and why to give F1E a try. Here is a heads up for you vicious
competitive types, I was the only American flying F1E at the recent world
champs and it is my goal to have a full USA team for the next F1E world
champs to be held in Romania in 2003. Anybody out there interested in
thinking different and competing for a slot?

All moving, lifting fins:
Since I want the lift of the fin to the left (= right turn) I put the flat
side to the right.
Looking at an average polar diagram the drag should be higher, if you try to
get that lift through a lot of negative incidence.
( See: I still think about drag, even using box fuselages, constand chord
wings and ... :-))
furthermore: all my fins have turbulators.
and: all fins are hinged on a 0.8mm piano wire, nothing thicker. In a crash,
this just slides out of the fuselage tubing, few breaks!

I'm pretty new to freeflight (less than a year) however I have been
involved in aeromodeling most of my life. The letters that I have been
reading about raising interest at events are some what puzzling.First
adding money to winnings, every time I have seen this done it does not
bring new people in. It does seem to eliminate the competitors who were
in it for sport and sorry to say people will cheat more often when there
is any money involved.Changing the rules to make the airplanes more
affordable isn't likely to help simply because more stringent rules
usually means more sofistication which means more money.weve all seen
this in any form of auto racing.
now for the new guys oppinion for what I think will help. try thinking
in this manner,if you have ever tried to catch a fish wouldnt it help to
ask the fish what would make him interested. what I mean by this is talk
to peaple at hobby shops most dont even now freeflight exists anymore. I
live near sacramento ca. and had no idea that wagel field was a free
flight site untill my dad asked me to meet him at a contest. so put up
info sheets(when and where the contests are). if possible maybe a video
of free flight planes being launched could be played ocassionally behind
the counter.(FIC'S being launched are impressive to new peaple)
basically stop being invisible.Another thing that might help, publish a
list of where to get parts. I have been helped to live near guys like
galbreath, oliver and roger simpson who have been a great help, but
still trying to find the parts to build with is extremely difficult.who
has props ,wings, fuselages booms etc. I know it might be a tough sell
since nffs normally charge for ads. but if every one is on the list who
could complain. and if might help freeflight in general.
Yes I do realize I may not know what I'm talking about but think about
what new people would be interested in not the experienced.

2002 NFFS TMOY

Fellow Modelers
The 2002 NFFS TMOY (ten models of the year) Committee is looking for
Christmas presents. Please consider nominating a free flight design to
be considered for inclusion in TMOY portion of the NFFS Symposium.
Nominations are due no later that February 1st 2002. It must include a
one page description of the model design and competition record, or
unique contribution for a component, tool or material. A resume of the
modeler/designer or inventor, a one page three view with dimensions and
a photograph of the nominated item, modeler or inventor. General
categories are, glider, rubber, power, indoor, scale and/or cool, nifty,
gotta have, component, tool or material.
I will copy the materials sent and distribute to our very talented
committee members who will vote on the best 2002 submissions. More
specifics are available on the NFFS web site or feel free to contact me.
I will continue to ask until our committee tree has a satisfactory
number of presents for all members to unwrap (I know we have all been
good).
