Snyder Swamp
============

In the 60's we had Fast Richard - Dick Mathis and his gang. Texas.
Dick Mathis was or Falstaff.
They operated at a place named Snyder Swamp.
All kinds of strange and marvelous things went on there.
They were rumored to be makeing a kind of beer from balsa shavings, for =
example.
I made a trip to visit Snyder Swamp that had disasterous results.
Meuser, then our NFFS Digest Editor, published my report.
Mathis was our Editor for the 2nd Annual Symposium ( ' 69 ), but had to =
dorp the task. .
Dave Linstrum finished the job.

I last saw Fast Richard with a booth at the Toledo Weak Signals Show, =
same timeperiod,
promoting Radio Control for Free Flight. He had a .15 powered model =
rigged for RC.
There was a gang , three or five guys, around Fast Richard. - Tommy...? =
Others. And Kit Bays.

I never met Kit Bays. He seems to have been part of the gang from the =
start.
Kit Bays appeares listed as a Patron for the Symposium from the =
beginning, when we first
started naming Patrons. He's there again in 2000 !
I don't remember seeing him in contest results...no pictures...

Who is Kit Bays? Where is Kit bays?

Roger and Jim:
Please see attached . Roger would you please do your magic and place
this into SCAT News. It should be noted that in F1G Fly-off, Bob White
declined to fly off until Paul Crowley got his model and eventually
declared the event a draw when Paul could not find the model. A full
report to follow.
Thanks for taking the time to come to Arizona and participate in the

Altitude sensor
===============

Roger,
The brief conversation with you and Andrew (I think) and myself at Eloy
this weekend past about using an onboard sensor to evaluate altitude height
gain during an F1A bunt launch made me wonder if such a device could be
linked to a DT release so that the model would DT at a pre-set altitude?
If so, such use would be within the current rules and might have an effect
on the argument for use of RDT (Reduce the chance of a fly-away or lost
model). Of course, since the sensor is based on pressure differentials, it
would probably have to be re-calibrated for every flight. Another chance
for a high-tech screw up so the Luddites can win more often.

The Detroit Balsa Bugs will be hosting the 52nd Annual Inter-City Meet on
June 23-24, 2001 at the AMA field in Muncie, Indiana. This is an America's
Cup Contest. Further details to follow. Motels in the area tend to fill
early, so make reservations.

Where the LHFAA ?

If you look on the recent flyer sent out for the Lost Hills Field dues there
is a difference between the return address and the one they specify to mail
it to for Al Richardson.

Is it 1933 or 1993 on the street number?

Thanks,

Terry Thorkildsen

Looking for Science Olympiad Publication

Can anyone put me in touch with a publication that is read and used by
science teachers who are mentoring the Science Olympiad model airplane event
? I want to try to bring my book on rubber power which is written more for
beginners than competitors to the attention of such a group. Don Ross

Joe Kenworthy

Allan Arnold asked, in SEN issue 531, about the subject flyer .

I found reference to Kenworthy in the 1934 Zaic Year Book as having won the
Wakefield trophy in 1933. He is listed with his club Lancashire M. A. S.
His best flight was 5 min and 21.0 sec. Unfortunately I could not find his
models in Zaic's issues I have.

Another string for the bow - or laterral thinking from the Barron
=================================================================

It never ceases to amaze me how we find all kinds of gadgets
to 'help' us the our flying. At the recent SWR 2001 Andrew Barron
had a very interesting spring balance. He had been concerned that his
sone John was not pulling back his motor enough when winding
his F1B. So he got a spring balance so he could
compare how much John was pulling compared with other sportsmen.
Now this is nothing special - except that the spring balance was one
used by archers for test the tension on bow strings. Compared with
the very clunky spring balace I have [and also Paul Crowley has]
this is a very small and very smooth operating. Now I have to go
to the local archery store. In answer to the other
question Paul Crowley pulled the most and I was about 5 pounds down
at 80 pounds or so and John below that. Now I'm not sure what I
really pull with my model, winder and stooge but will check it out,
maybe not enough ?!
