Black Magic Backups?

Roger,

I had to reset my Palm and was able to reload it from the PC backup. I had
to reload the Black Magic [BM] program that was downloaded and stored on my
PC. However, none of my BM programs have been saved. Is there a way to
backup the BM programs onto the PC? As far as I can see, the hot sync only
backs up the Palm programs.

Aram

[Aram,
You are the second or third person to ask me that question in the last
week or so. You are correct the HotSync process does not backup non-Palm
data. It will restore the nmagic program.

I use a program called Backup Buddy. You can get it from a number
of places such as www.backupbuddy.com. The cost is [or was when I got mine]
$29.00. I had looked at doing this but it has been pushed so far down
the to do list, you shouild spend the $29.00]

More Towing Citations and a Conjecture
======================================

Jim Thornbery gave two Sympo citations analyzing the tow hook position.
The Sympos I have happen to have two more important articles on this
subject: M. Kochkarrev & S. Makarov "A Study of the Start and Speeding
Up on an F1A Glider on a Towline with the Use of a Mathematical Model",
in the 91' Sympo and an article by A. Bauer "F1A Towing and Bunting" in
the 93' Sympo.

The four cited articles assume a fixed tow hook position and decalage
during the on-line-acceleration [OLA]. Under these assumptions, a
particular hook position/decalage is only optimal over a fairly narrow
segment of the arc the model travels during the OLA, since the conditions
along the ascent are highly non-linear. If the hook position as could be
moves and the decalage modified during the OLA, then in the lower
portions of the arc the hook should be more forward and the decalage
should be higher, while the opposite will hold as the model reaches the
higher segments of the arc.

In the future, the hook position as well as the stab's decalage will
probably be controllable during the OLA in electronic models. Such
models would reach higher altitudes, and this might be one of the areas
that electronic timers would have the largest impact. At the present,
however, we are limited to a single tow-hook position and decalage,
and try to select the best (fixed) combination.

Finally, happy new year to all the flying community!

Aram

F3J Free Flight Model Airplane Interest
=======================================

Roger,

My father-in-law is from Sweden and from what I understand, his biggest =
interest is F3J type of Free Flight Model Airplanes. He has competed =
flying these airplanes in Sweden for most of his adult life.

I'm currently trying to find information over the internet in English so =
I might find some things to do with him close to where I live in =
Northern Virginia (near Washington, D.C.)

Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

[Tony, F3J is not a free flight but rather
a hand towed R/C glider event. The towing is similar
to that done in the F1A or F1H free flight classes.
It is possible that he may be interested in Free flight
and F3J, there are people in this country that fly both.

Lets see if any any readers have ideas for sites
in the Northern Virginia area.

Otherwise you could go the the AMA site
www.modelaircraft.org and look for clubs near you.]

Tractor Rubber Models

Roger, Even though I am not involved in flying rubber except for fun once in
a while; I remember Sal Cannizzo with whom I flew with in New York and out at
Hadley Field in NJ. As you now Sal was a terrific Wakefield flyer; no slouch
with power also(whipped me a few times) or indoor He had a rig setup in his
garage, a hook on heavy wood on one wall and a hook on the front bumper of
his VolksWagen. I believe he had some sort of poundage guage there also, but
I know he backed the VW up to a mark in his driveway and held it for so many
seconds and then let the car get pulled back slowly for x number of seconds.
These motors were all tested and recorded and then other batches were done
similarly to different distances and poundage, etc. Sal could pack more
turns into his motors and get longer runs than anybody I saw at the time. He
is still modeling in southern NJ, and is a font of info, and willing to give
help to anyone. He has given me some terrific advise for F1C lately and I
haven't been crashing as much, regards for the holidays Joe

Not Martyn's Twanger

Can anyone out there tell me where I can find .028 in. [.70 mm] dia. music
wire? It's used for some of the release levers on European F1B timers.
Thanks, Paul Crowley

[Paul,
I have can give you two answers, the first is to ask some
F1B factory such as AA. The second is apparntly equally obvious
and that is go to a [serious] music store. Norm Furutani being
a [serious ?] musican found that metal strings for a harp [I'm 99%
certain] go up by very small increments. There is an additional
advantage in that they are finished with a protective surface that
is intented to stop oils from the harpists fingers rusting the surface.
This give an attractive finish.]
