Skyscraper’s Annual, June 25th 2017 Wawaywanda NY

Saturday June 24 was a blowout and all events were shifted to Sunday. On Saturday it also rained heavily along the Atlantic coast, but Wawaywanda was spared the rain.
Saturday started quietly and the wind gradually picking up, becoming turbulent in the second half of the fifth round, spoiling many scores. Because all events were flown on the same day, Bob Sifleet and I opted not to fly Q. The only superman flying two events (A and Q) was Joel Yuri.
Only Joel Yuri maxed out in A.
In Q Drake Hooke and Bob Sifleet maxed out and the flyoff was flown with 66% of the model’s energy budget, reducing Drake’s motor run to 3 seconds and Bob’s to 26 seconds. Drake model did not accelerate as usual and it over bunted - placing him second. He later flew a LDA model with a 3 second motor run and got twice as high. A “bad air” simultaneous launch was selected to keep models on the field.
Similarly, in B, a “bad air” window was selected with a 7-minute working window. Sara Radziunas flew first into a nice patch of air. Carrol Allen broke a motor and manage to fly in the last 10 seconds, catching another nice patch of air. Both Sara and Carrol later encountered strong turbulence, with Sara ending up 9 seconds ahead. Fortunately, both landed in the field.
Dave Acton performed all the administrative functions.

UK FFTC 2018 Calendar and Rule Changes proposals

From: David Brawn
Open comment on the 2018 Calendar and Rule Changes proposals by Free Flight Technical Committee

Dear Mates (or Free Flight Technical Committee as you may prefer to be known),
I would like to make a comment on both the 2018 Calendar and 2018 Rule Changes.

2018 Calendar, I welcome the idea of including the Brit classes at every area centralised event but could we also have HLG/CLG included at each area event.

2018 Rule Changes
If you are proposing to change the motive power across classes (lines, weight, run time) then please make the reductions the same across all sections of a general class. In Glider F1A Bunter is – 25%, Straight Tow is -33.33%, Classic is -33.33% and Vintage is – 25%.
Looking at the FFTC it is clear that glider flying members fly F1A and Vintage gliders; John and Chris stand up!

If you are worried about where models are going in Fly-Offs then why not either stop having fly-offs (replace with a lottery draw) or fly-off at a time when there is minimum lift eg Nationals Fly-Offs are held at dawn on the following day as they are in Australia – could also work for Day 1 classes at London and Anglia Galas and the Trials.

General Comment
I heartily applauded the FFTC for introducing the current style of events specifications but since then the FFTC seem to have done nothing about the declining numbers of flyers entering, or wishing to enter, contests.
Compare to Peterborough MFC bringing more people in to compete.
What is FFTC planning to increase participation? As a clue see my previous correspondence on competitions and participation, which were summarily dismissed by individual members of FFTC, such a 2-Day Galas having separate HLG and CLG contests and producing League scores for each FFTC competition class.
If you were providing the type of contests that free flight flyers enjoy competing in then you would not have the pitiful level of entries we are currently seeing.
Wishing you all the best.
