2017 Big Al’s Contest Report

As last year, we flew the contest from the middle of the Holloway land to the North to stay away from the trees to the South.  We used the new road that was made during the February contest.  The grass was not too tall in this area and made for a good site to hold the contest.  In the past the ground was very soft and the winter rain has compacted the dirt into a good sold condition for riding motorcycles on and setting up winding stooges for F1B models.

Saturday had very pleasant conditions in the morning with thermals present in the first round.  The drift as forecasted was from the North all day.  The fourth round had very difficult conditions with periods of calm with very strong thermals.  The remaining rounds had these conditions also with big thermals and a long time for the models to return back to Mother Earth after the DT.  Mike Davis’s flight in the sixth round made the trees with no damage to the model after using a pole to retrieve it from the top of a tree.

The F1A event had six entries. Jim Parker had a perfect day with a max out and claimed the Big Al’s perpetual trophy.  Mike Davis did a excellent job of selecting when to fly in the difficult conditions with a max out in F1B and won the F1B perpetual trophy.  The rest of us dropped one or two rounds in the difficult conditions.  F1C had four entries and each of them had model issues during the day.  Ed Carroll was the winner and claimed the perpetual trophy.  The two F1Q entries ended up with Mike Pykelny the winner.  Randy Secor made one flight in F1P and then had some engine/model issues.

Sunday had a light drift from the North.  With a very low entry we decided to fly the first flight to the ground just in case we had a tie and then went to a very relaxed round system to end the contest.  Mike Richardson and Mike Davies made all maxes and had a two round flyoff.  Mike Davis dropped the second flyoff round which made Mike Richardson the winner.  Mike McKeever was the only entry in F1H.  Ben Tracher won F1S with Matt Gewain coming in second place.

Ron McBurnett again had Bissonnette Memorial T-shirts with a “Goodbye” note as this was the last Bissonnette Memorial due to low attendance

In the latest (June 2017) Model Aviation magazine an excellent  interview with John Lorbiecki Jnr.  John was Junior World Champ in F1J/P   in 2004 and is now an F-16 pilot for the US Air Force.
