Nov 2013  AmCup Report

In 2012 SCAT removed the limit on the number of AmCup contests. The number of 2012 AmCup contests increased from 30 to 34. In 2013 the total number of contests is 36 which is includes the dropping of one of the existing contest per the request of the organizers. It looks like the request for new AmCup sanctions has topped out but if a club or CD wants a new AmCup sanction for 2014, please contact me.

With 34 of 36 contests complete, the year end evaluations of the top flyers are being made. Do I go to Eloy and / or King Orange this year?  Let’s take a look. Bonus points are critical at this point however last year between the December Eloy and King Orange contest only the December Eloy F1A event had bonus points and F1B had 5 entrants-- the other events where in the 2 to 3 entrants range.

F1A: Shlomi Rozenzweig is in the lead with 108 points and could improve this score if last year’s F1A turn out at Eloy repeats. He may be thinking about going to keep these bonus points from someone lurking behind him with a 3 contest total of 87 points. Lee Hines could take the lead with a 29 point win. Jama Danier is mathematically  still in the hunt but would require winning both contests and needed 4 to 5 bonus points each— the King Orange bonus points are not probable- last 2 years there have been zero F1A flyers.

F1B:  Tom Vaccaro has all but a mathematical lock here. Charlie Jones is in the Jama situation needing to win both contests with 4 to 5 bonus points each. An interesting note this year is Alex Andriukov’s  7 wins at Lost Hills, 5 of which were 30 point contests—alas he has no other  AmCup site wins. He’ll just have to console himself with his 2013 F1B World Cup victory! Tom won the SCAT annual and Livotto’s, both 30 point contests. In other words, Tom and Alex won all but one of the Lost Hills F1B contests this year (Tiffany O’dell won Big Al’s).

F1C:  In the light of the recent Boulder City vs Lost Hills discussion and vote, the trend of the power flyers not venturing from just a few venues continues. Only two F1C flyers meet the 3 site AmCup rule this year. In 2012 only 1 flyer meets the 3 site rule.  Roger Simpson is in the lead with 103 points and has scored points at 3 sites.  This will likely be enough to keep the lead over fellow Texan Faust Parker who is in second—he’d need  a combination of 3 bonus point wins to tie Roger which would give Faust the AmCup by tie breaker rule.  2012 winner, Ron McBurnett could take the lead with a bonus point 3 combinations as well.

F1P:  This FAI Jr created power event had initially looked to become a popular beyond the Jr flyers but the current trend does not look so great.   11 of the completed 34 contests had no F1P flyers and of the contests with F1P flyers the maximum number of flyers was 3. Therefore there are no bonus points and so the battle turns out to be who wins the most contests. As for the last 2 years, this has become a battle between Glen Schneider and Bob Hanford with Taron Malkhasyan (a junior flyer) keeping them honest. Glen is in the lead with 9 wins to Bob Hanford’s 7 wins. Taron has 4 wins.  The good news is the Fedor boys, Colby and Cade have joined the fray and look to be strong contender for the 2014 Jr team.  A separate Jr team report will be out soon.

F1G:  The small rubber class is as strong as ever with 34 flyers posting scores. In the lead is Blake Jensen with 102 points. Several flyers have reasonable chance to catch Blake but 1 to 3 bonus points will be needed. Eddie VanLandingham needs 2 bonus points for the tie and would win the tie breaker. Tiffany O’dell needs 2 bonus points for the win. Geralyn Jones needs   two simple 25 points wins to take the lead. Lurking with 3 wins and 76 points each are Tom Vaccaro and Tony Mattews who with a 3 bonus point win could take the lead.

F1H:  The small glider event is similar to F1P but there are a handful of small bonus points that now strongly influence the winning score.  The NATs had a high of 9 entrants so Bob Sifleet got those 2 bonus points and total of 102 points.  Brian VanNest won the two only other bonus 1 point contests for a total of 102 points and would currently win the tie breaker.  I’d need to go to Florida because an Eloy win does not help me. Mike McKeever has a shot but would need a 3 bonus point.

F1J:  What do I say? Only 14 of the 36 contest had F1J flyers with the no bonus points (5 or less entrants). Faust Parker has a lock on the lead with eight 25 point wins. Jean Pailet is in second with three 25 point wins.

F1Q:  The electric event continues to grow despite the swirl about current and future rules. As a comparison, F1Q was flown at 24 of the 34 contests although the number of entrants per contest is about 3, there are three contests with bonus points. Julie Parker is in the lead with 102 points getting her 2 bonus points at the NATs.  Bernie Crowe won the two other 1 bonus contests and so could tie Julie with a simple 25 point win but Julie would win the tie breaker.

F1E: Like F1P, initial strong growth has not held. Only 2 contests were flown this year—the one in Denver did not complete.  The small but dedicated group continues to do well at the F1E WCs. Even so, here in the North America, this event is the red head cousin. Needing a hill to fly from, only Lost Hills and Denver are situated to fly F1E injunction with the other FAI events. SCAT continues to offer to put other contests not associated with the “flat lander contests” on the schedule—ie  I’d develop a unique schedule for F1E.

As in the past years, the 2013 AmCup Awards will be awarded at the SCAT AmCup Banquet in association with the 2014 MaxMen contest at the Wasco Elk’s Club, Saturday Feb 15, 2014.  Make plans to attend. Please send AmCup score questions or corrections to This email address is being protected from spambots.
