Skyscrapers Annual results



  Here and in the next email are the results of two Americas Cup contests at Barron Field in Wawayanda, New York.  First here are the results of the Skyscraper Annual June 25-26, 2011. Highlights included max out wins by Kathy Radziunas in F1G, Tom Vaccaro in F1B, Andrei Kirilinko in F1C, Tom Juell in P-30, and Jean Pailet in 1/2 A Gas. Distinctive Junior performances were by the Avla sisters, Rebecca and Jessica in P-30 and Gina Barron in Catapult and three towline glider events.

  An unfortunate wind change Sunday afternoon put two models in trees. Carrol Allen got his back by an amazing climbing effort by him, whereas I resorted to a professional tree climber to get mine.  Both models were retreived without a scratch: well, at least there were no scratches on the models.  We stopped after round 6.

Wilbur and Orville Society fall free flight Americas Cup



Free Flight Friends,

  Here are the results of the Wilbur and Orville Society fall free flight Americas Cup contest August 20-21, 2011 (AMA sanction no 11-1654). One highlight includes the tight finish in F1B with only four seconds separating Aram, Ron, and Junior Wes Murrell. Another was the win by young junior flier Gina Barron (Age 9) in F1A against some competitors of considerably more years.  Another junior Brian Pacelli maxed out in F1P.

  Saturday featured gloriously calm conditions for some of the best flying opportunity, and led to nice performance by several including Vic Nippert and Dave Lacey in electric events, Arnold Waldner in P-30, and Don Rousseau in F1G just a few seconds ahead of Bill Buss and Carrol Allen.

  Sunday, an excessively high wind arrived at about 12:30pm
during round 5. Some had already completed their flights for that round. Gina Barron and Aram Schlosberg put up their winning flights in the extreme conditions toward the end of the round.  Sarah Radziunas was able to find her F1B a couple of miles down wind in a stream after a long search.  Unfortunately for Aram, one of his models did not DT in round 1 thermalling into the clouds soon after 7:30am and remains lost after a couple of days of search.

Wanted - F1H Bunter

Better Planning ...

Editorial

You will have seen in a SEN a few issues back Jim Parker talking about the planning for next year's America's Cup.  SCAT manages the sanctions and collates all the results but we do not give guidance on when the events should be or try and resolve date conflicts.

 I was very disappointed to see 3 contests - Tangent, Muncie and Wawayanda on the same date in August, followed by some disappointment from the organizers on attendance and the a similar reaction from some of the attendees on being not enough of the good guys at the event they attended.

When I was working and traveling a lot I found it hard to get to contests but made an effort.  Having a responsible job I could not goof off on Fridays so it was just as well that I did not fly F1A in the big events.  I understand that if you are the real hard core guy you might take a day or two of vacation, but the contests also include normal people, these people make up the numbers.  These are also people who may later degenerate into hard core FAI sportsmen.  We cannot complain about attendance if we make it hard for regular people to get to the events.

It's been good to see young people [Austin, Sarah, Ryan, Evan, John, Cody...] in their 20s come out and fly, but there are some other former junior team members and F1A flyers who are just getting started with their careers. If they are responsible people in these economic times they are going to be careful about the days they have off so probably won't be too keen on Friday contests

This year it has got worse for me in that I'm try to help my grandson, Wes.  I terms of getting off to contests, school is tougher than work.  That's why it was not good  with two eastern events - Muncie and Wawaynda on the same day and in the school holidays.  Note there was  another east coast contest earlier in August but it was in Canada, OK for the America's Cup but not good for USA team selection minutes for either the juniors or seniors. 

We are making an effort to attract people from other countries to fly in our events.  Lost Hills is a great site an people like flying there.  The experts from all over the world enhance our events and the locals benefit from seeing them fly.  But the locals have to be there to see them and for the foreign expert to want to attend he must have the potential to get World Cup bonus points if he wins.  Local flyers make up the numbers and help with upping those bonus point.  Clearly the Free Flight Festivals are helpful for the person who can travel because the optomise the travel spend but that alone is not enough. 

What are some ideas to improve participation?
