Just an obserJation....

The America's cup results clearly show that ONLY F1G amongst the mini FAI events has more participants than F1J.

It would be an acceptable statement when folks making statements, such as: " we don't include F1J as an event because nobody flies it." Those folks should first have done some homework. As it is they have done the event and FAI a diss-service.

Chase Bike for sale

We no longer have the need for or way to get our second chase bike to the field so we are selling the 2003 Suzuki DR-Z 125.

2009 Southwest FAI Challenge
October 24 & 25, 2009

Each of the last few years I have had the opportunity to sit here and describe another Southwest FAI Challenge that had extraordinary weather, great flying and superb flyoffs.  This year the weather forecast told us we would have a little more wind than usual, in the 8-10 MPH range, but still very flyable, especially on the wide-open El Dorado dry lakebed.  What we had on Saturday however, was another …ho-hum…. perfect day.  The thermal activity was typical for Boulder City with gentle lift and as Rich Rohrke commented, winds gusting to 2 MPH.  For those of us accustomed to flying at Lost Hills and waiting for that “fill” after the calm, it was a little un-nerving at times because there often just wasn’t any fill. 

It was terrific to see three F1C flyers in attendance including Mike Roberts who joined us to chase Americas Cup points.  Ed Carroll and Henning Nyhgen pushed Mike to a clean score and a first place finish that secured the 2009 Americas Cup in F1C.  Between F1A and F1B, there were 9 clean scorecards through 6 rounds, but Round 7 took its toll, knocking Don Zink out of F1A and Bob Piserchio, Roger Morrell and Dick Wood from the red number list in F1B.  All but one of the remaining F1A & F1B flyers easily made the 5 minute flyoff round.  Rich Rohrke had an unfortunate power flop that cost him precious altitude.  As the air cooled and the sun began to set, we all prepared for the deciding 7 minute flights.  For those that have not been to Boulder City, it is hard to describe just how perfect those last flights at the end of the day can be.  Mike McKeever and Brian Van Nest towed together for a few minutes, with Mike launching 40 seconds or so ahead of Brian.  For the next 4-5 minutes we watched as the models glided together in about the same area, with Brian touching down just before Mike, giving Mike the win.  About ten minutes later, Blake and I were off floating in a very similar scenario, against the rugged hills and the orange sunset.  My model landed several seconds before Blake and thought he had won handily. I did not realize he had launched almost 20 seconds after I did.  The final result still found Blake on top of the heap, but only by 4 seconds!  That flyoff may be the flight that secured the 2009 F1B Americas Cup for Blake as well (but I made him earn it!)  F1Q continues to be a growing event at this meet. This year we had 5 entries.  Returning Champion Bernie Crowe stumbled in Round 1, but the field came back to him over the next 6 rounds he pulled back out in front and repeated his win from 2008, followed by Mike Pykelny and Larry Bagalini.  In F1P, perennial winner Tony Robertson hiccupped in Round 1 and Junior Team hopeful Taron Malkhasyan didn’t let him off the hook, taking home the first place glassware.  Taron’s brother Sevak put in a good showing in F1B as well although he tested the CD’s nerves by launching in the last 30 seconds of not one, but two rounds!

And then there was Sunday.  The wind we didn’t see on Saturday joined the forecasted wind for Sunday. We finally gave up hope at about 10AM when the “lulls” were 15 MPH and the gusts upward of 25 MPH.  An announcement regarding a rescheduled date will be made soon.  This most likely will be at Perris and will NOT count for Americas Cup points because of the change in venue.  Rescheduling for Boulder City is just not practical.  Look for a notice on SEN soon.

Many thanks to Bob Beecroft for working the table so that I could fly and to our long distance visitors, the Clapps, Mike Roberts, Blake Jensen and Henning Nyhgen.  We were very pleased to see record seven Orbiteers in attendance.  Of course we are always glad and grateful to see all the “regulars” and to Jon Zeisloft who kept this meet afloat all by himself for several years so that it was still around for us to carry on.

Put this contest on your calendar for next year.  I realize it is not Lost Hills and Denny’s, but we can offer a decent alternative with an unlimited choice of accommodations including the world famous Las Vegas Strip, 5-Diamond Resorts, superstar entertainment & shows, fine art galleries (ever seen a Rembrandt or Van Gogh?) and genuine world class dining, all within a 30 minute drive of a magnificent field.

Hi Roger,

We have successfully worked our way through the re-scheduling process for the SW FAI Challenge Mini Events.   The make-up date is Sunday December 13, 2009 at Perris.  Please note everything is the same as the originally scheduled day we lost to the wind except....VERY IMPORTANT....there will be NO Americas Cup points awarded.  Due to the change in venue, this part of the meet, this year only, will not be an Americas Cup contest.

Flyoffs
No earlier than 1:45PM (30 minutes after close of Round 5) flyoffs will begin. For F1G, F1H and F1J, the first flyoff round Max will be 180 seconds, the second flyoff Max, if required, will be 240 seconds and the third flyoff Max, if required, will be 300 seconds.  
Vintage FAI Flyoffs will use the same engine runs, with Maxes increasing by 60 seconds starting with 240 seconds. 
For all events, if a winner is not determined at the conclusion of three flyoff rounds, the Espresso Flyoff times will be used to determine final placing.
***There will be NO timers provided. Please find someone to fly and time with you.***
Awards
Perpetual Trophies to winners in F1G, F1H and F1J
Glassware 1st through 3rd place for all events, including Vintage FAI Power, P-30 and winners of Espresso Flyoffs
Entry Fee: $10 for each event. No entry fee for Juniors or Espresso Flyoff

Directions to “Sal Taibi” Perris Field:
The field is located between San Jacinto Avenue and I-215 on the northeast side of I-215 (opposite side of freeway from City of Perris)
Approximate GPS coordinates at field entrance:          33 47’ 10.80” N
117 12’ 06.81” N
From the North: Take the D Street exit off I-215. Proceed to Fourth Street/Hwy 74, turn left and cross back over the freeway.
From the South: Take the Fourth Street/Hwy 74 exit off I-215 and turn right. 
Once headed north proceed 1 block to San Jacinto Avenue (Shell station) and turn right. Proceed east approximately ¾ miles.
The dirt access road to the flying area is on the far side of the dirt storm drainage channel.
