Arizona FF Championships

December 2 and 3 we will have the Arizona Free Flight Championships in
Eloy, AZ. This is the last America's Cup and National Cup contest West
of the Missisippi for the year 2006. There are AMA, NFFS, and SAM events
plus the separate FAI contest. The two flyers can be downloaded from the
Master Contest Calendar at the NFFS web site
http://www.freeflight.org/competition.htm. It should be cool in the
mornings but warm up to about 70=B0 during the day.

Interesting discussion on the subject going on.

I agree with various posters that compared to the stage of affairs 10
years ago, with 40 grams of 99-vintage rubber, the current situation with
30 grams of Super Sport has cut down F1B performance quite a lot. I claim
that the still-air performance of modern F1B's, without lift, is around 5
mins, about the same as with F1A. From this point of view I think that
choosing right times of the day to fly, in other words avoiding strongest
winds and thermals, would do good for the problem, and using RadioDT would
also help a lot, without a need to touch the model performance.

However, if we need to go that way, I would like to point out that there
are two kinds of rule changes, ones that tend to level out the playing
field, others that increase the gap between experts and ordinary fliers.
In my view, the rule changes suggest by Stamov fall into the latter
category: if you shorten the towline, you make the succesful launch more
critical for good performance. And if you cut the rubber, or motor run,
you similarly make it more important to get every joule of rubber energy,
or the last few rpm's of the motor tuning, to gain maximum altitude.

On the other hand, changes that tend to increase the sinking speed work
the other way, and should cut down performance of every flier in the same
way. The "ping-pong-balls" increase the drag of the model and thus sinking
speed, and another feature suggested in the previous round of rules
discussion, increasing the weight of the models, would in similar way
increase sinking speed. These changes would, in my opinion, touch the
field in a more uniform way. Myself being in the "Joe Average" category,
would prefer these options of rule changes. If changes are needed at all.

For F1C, that is a can of worms that I do not want to open. I have my view
what would be needed for that class, but you do not want to hear it, so I
do not say it aloud...

I notice that my table of Simulation results, for F1B performance vs rubber
weight, appeared in SEN in a garbled version, impossible to make sense of,
due no doubt to my inability to send it in a form that would appear properly
(apologies Roger). Just in case the results are of interest, here they are
again in brief, (Just the durations alone). I hope this will now read OK in SEN.
These times are towards the max achievable I think, so in reality I would
expect it would be very difficult to consistently make three minutes with
20gms of rubber, especially if it's Super Sport. 2 1/2 minutes may be a more
realistic expectation for an average flight.

A stratagy that I tried, some time ago ( not reccomended ) ,
- in the face of..absolutely no one present to serve us :
After a long wait, I went into the kitchen.
