Gentlemen,

Am I blind or does the following rule in the FAI Sporting Code for F1G
imply that auto surfaces are not permissable?

F1G 3.G.1 "Definition. A model aircraft which is powered by an
extensible motor and in which lift is generated by the aerodynamic
forces acting on surfaces remaining fixed in flight."

In comparison, look at what the same section--"Definition"--under F1B
states:

F1B 3.2.1 "Definition Model aircraft which is powered by an extensible
motor and in which lift is generated by the aerodynamic forces acting on
surfaces remaining fixed in flight, except for changes of camber or
incidence. Model aircraft with variable geometry or area must comply
with the specifications when the surfaces are in minimum and maximum
extended mode."

BTW all the other events F1A-C-H-J and even F1D and F1E make the same
specific allowance for variable geometry. F1G is the only event under F1
that does NOT!!

VERY puzzled here, please help!

Sierra Champs Banquet

For those of you who are attending the Sierra Champs April 2-3 on
Sacramento's Waegell Field, an America's Cup event, there will be a banquet on
Saturday
evening April 2. The banquet will be at Vince's Italian Restaurant in Elk
Grove (maps available at the field). Bar opens at 6:30 with dinner at 7:30
and your choices are Sirloin Steak, Chicken Cacciatore or a Vegetarian Meal.

Price is $21 and while you can pay at the banquet, I need to know what you

WONRERFULL BEAR CUP



We had another wonderful weather and nice World Cup contest in Pori Finland
5. Marsh.



Winter has been mild until latest weeks in Finland. So Lake Pyhajarvi had
now less than 50 cm of ice and the organizing Aviation Club did not want all
the cars on ice. A couple of cm of hard snow on ice make the surface nice to
walk or ski.

The morning was pretty cold, some -8 degrees Celsius warming up before noon.
Before the contest started there was some mist and slightly limited
visibility. So the first round max was only 3 minutes. Morning 3...4 m/s
wind got down to almost no wind when before noon when sun came out burning
from the blue skies and reflecting from dazzling white snow. So nice flying.
Only a few moments with some tricky air between nice and smooth lifts.

It was great to see the two great champions Andres Lepp and Victor Tchop
flying and smiling relaxed on the ice. Victor was 6 seconds better.

Hi all SENners,
Roger Coleman asked me to send a quick note while he compiles the
results, which will follow ASAP.
After the T-storm rains left on Friday[1 to 1.5 per Holloway's gauge]many
sportspersons had to be 'extricated' Saturday am from the mucky bits
where their vehicles were 'parked'.
We organizers held the start til noon, which allowed the ground to dry
a lot and some were able to drive in, while the GREAT chaps at Holloway
Gypsum went around pulling out all the stuck folks!
We certainly thank them and appreciate their assistance!
[GB: please relay that, if you will. LRH]

The day was absolutely great for free flight, so we had 45 minutes rounds.
This meant the end of rd 7 would be at 1715hrs, so the FOs were held
beginning at 7AM Sunday. Again the weather was perfect for a 10 minute
max, performance Flyoff.
The initials of the A,B,C event winners are: M. McK, B.B.Jr, M.R. resp.
You figure it out. Or wait for RC's tabulated results...stay tuned...

Sunday's schedule was time shifted to 0830hr to allow everyone to
regroup after the exciting AM Flyoffs.
The SUPERB conditions remained, maybe even calmer than Sat.
Each Mini event had multiple maxouts, as did Cat Glider.
The guys in Mini events were having a ball in the Flyoffs, so to get a result,
we cut the launch window down and winners were determined by a little
after 1600hr.
Some great flying was observed and I believe all flyaway birds
were retrieved AOK!

Thanks to everyone who attended, braving the difficulties encountered
due to the extremely wet, soft, muddy situation of Friday thru Sat morn.
The out-of-staters included the Jones' from Ohio, the Brocks, Dick Woods
and Willard from AZ, Mike Roberts from WA, Ted Vernon and Blake from
Oregon, and oh yes, Ralph Ray from Northern Mexico[in joke, sorry].

FYI, for next years SCAT ANNUAL we are contemplating a shift in date
to the 3rd weekend in March.
[Constructive comments and thoughts on subject welcomed.]

Let me take this opportunity to thank all those fine chaps who have
responded to my request for information(not info!) on this product. It
appears in summation to be an acrylic fixative used in the graphic arts
industry to prevent smudging of draweings, pastelks,etc.

I had talked to some of the people in the art shops before I made my request
as indicated and, they although not knowing the product, suggested an
acrylic fixative that might do the job when I explained what I was going to
use it for ( the Krylon) So I will be going back to them to get some,
albeit not the Krylon trade mark but an English equivalent.

NFFS Membership Drive - A Considered Response:

Gentlemen, fasten your safety belts - were going to be doing some
aerobatics. I hope all members will forgive me these comments, and
take them in the spirit they are intended. If I didn't care, I would
have bothered to reply. But I cannot help but think if we keep doing
things the same old way, we're going to get the same results ! Your
plea for new members (SEN 935, Don DeLoach) is preaching to the
converted. You already have 50% of all known US Free Flighters
signed up as NFFS members. So what do we do next ?

Trying to twist those remaining F/F'ers arms isn't going to work.
The best you can hope for is 4,000 total members who already fly F/F,
and then what ? The laws of diminishing returns start to apply long
before this goal will ever be achieved. Like now.
Instead, why not solicit our 2,000 members for ideas of how to go
about this differently ?

I suggest we have to start getting the word out to a wider audience,
beginning with the existing aviation / modeling community and to kids
through schools. Junior NFFS Membership should be $5, or $1 - then
you'd get some new members.

For example, instead of going after the remaining 50% of F/F'ers, why
not try to sign up a smaller percentage of the AMA's 100,000 members
(even 1% = 1,000 new members) - and remember, they don't even know
Free Flight exists. How could they ? We fly our models 100 miles
away from civilization, starting at dawn. They don't read SEN and
they don't get the Digest. Model Aviation now only runs 6 outdoor
F/F columns per year (for some 100 different outdoor events !). That
works out to about 5 lines per Class per year, or 1 photo every
decade. Of course in reality many F/F Classes receive zero coverage,
so for followers of those specialties they never even know their
favorite event still has any following in the US. Why is this and
how can we fix it ?

By comparison, Control Line only has a handful of different
disciplines, and yet each one of them has it's own bi-monthly column:
Speed, Aerobatics, Team Race, Combat, Scale, Carrier. I won't even
try to list all the R/C columns: Scale, Giant Scale, Aerobatics,
Scale Aerobatics, Giant Scale Aerobatics, Multi-Engine Giant Scale
Aerobatics, Electric Multi-Engine Giant Scale Aerobatics (Yes, for
sure this will be next) - OK, that's enough ! But ALL outdoor
contest Free Flight only has ONE bi-monthly column. Why isn't there
at least a separate Glider, Rubber and Power column ? Or what about
separate FAI, AMA and Nostalgia columns ? What can be done about
this ?

My personal observation (and I'm not trying to knock the AMA, just
acknowledging the reality of our situation) is that the formation of
Special Interest Groups (SIG's) merely dilutes Model Aviation's
coverage of the sport and technology of aeromodels. It is no longer
the AMA's responsibility to foster each of the SIG disciplines, they
can leave it to each of these dis-separate groups to go it alone.
And we see the results of what happens next. Free Flight (and the
other SIGs) get lost in our own little insular bubble, and even other
modelers in the US hardly even know of each others existence (MACA,
PAMPA, VRCS, etc, and dozens of others - who are they ?). Try
searching for a link to NFFS, National Free Flight Society, SIG or
Special Interest Groups on the AMA website and you'll be
disappointed. We don't exist.

Model Aviation no longer informs the readership monthly how to make
and fly models, the little gadgets, tricks and techniques needed to
succeed. Instead, this information is buried in dozens of specialist
newsletters by each different group. How to make a balsa-wood fuel
tank, or Discuss Launch, or the latest computer optimized low speed
airfoils, or a hundred other great ideas - you would have to join a
dozen other SIG organizations to find all this stuff out. The hobby
has become fragmented by these specialist splinter groups, which hold
onto such secrets, when we should be trying to get the word out on
the latest ways to build and trim models and have fun. The Digest
contains such good information, but our potential pool of new members
never gets the chance to read it. What can we do about this ?
As is the case, as the National body representing all of US outdoor
Free Flight, we are too weak to have the AMA recognize us as being
any more worthy as a collective group, than say C/L Scale (where the
total annual entry at the NATS regularly amounts to just 2 or 3
participants - yes, look it up). Face it, Model Aviation gives all
outdoor F/F the same amount of bi-monthly publishing space as C/L
Scale ! Publishing our own news to our own insular group isn't going
to fix anything. What are we going to do about this sad discrepancy ?

So, here's a radical concept. NFFS cannot afford to advertise to get
the word out about F/F to a broader audience, yet we need to do so.
However, the only F/F publication, the Digest, is only received by
those who are already NFFS members. See any connection here ?
Free Flighters are not paranoid, they really are trying to shut us
down ! (its OK - that was a joke). If we cannot beg for more pages
then we should buy them - I don't think AMA will turn that down !
(now I'm not joking).

Therefore, why not stop publication of the Digest (brief pause for
cries of anguish) thereby saving all the printing and distribution
costs. Then invest these same funds by buying an equivalent value of
full-page space in Model Aviation (or any of the other worthwhile
magazines, such as Flying Models, which seems to have a readership of
similar interests).

Use the same groovy graphics which are the hallmark of the NFFS
website, as a header for these magazine pages (the endless horizon of
a F/F flying field). Then print only the best material, articles,
3-view plans, gizmos and how-to features, that would have appeared in
that month's Digest. The ones that make you want to run out and
build a Free Flight model. (Yes I realize we depend upon the
generosity of those who volunteer their time and effort to shoulder
these burdens for us all. But the overall workload will be about the
same, or should be even less with fewer pages of higher quality, and
the work perhaps more rewarding reaching as it will a wider audience).

Some additional materials such as contest reports, full results,
rules and organizational matters (which are important, but not vital
to the pages of a magazine) can instead be more efficiently and
economically posted in bulk as monthly pdf documents on the NFFS
website, to form a long term source of information and reference,
instead of chopping down trees to publish the Digest each month
(despite the fact that any excuse to chop down trees remains near and
dear to the hearts of all F/F'ers). The NFFS SIG Model Aviation
magazine pages would then direct all interested parties to this
additional information on the website. (Yes OK, so I realize that a
few NFFS members do not have computers - but surely they have family,
friends or neighbors who can help them out by accessing such news for
them ?) We must embrace change to our benefit.

Think about it - it's not that radical. This is exactly what the AMA
themselves did back in the 1970's. They changed from producing their
own insular membership newsletter, to producing a
ready-for-prime-time, mass-market magazine. The Free Flight
community is being denied the exposure that Model Aviation (or other
such) modeling publications currently offer.

What does NFFS already do well, and what should we change ?

NFFS Scholarships, like the AMA grant program, is a very worthwhile concept.

The NFFS website is fantastic. It's colorful, well illustrated, up
to date, even inspiring - but how will non-NFFS members ever know we
exist, or find their way to this site ? How many of you read the
other modeling websites ?

The Symposium is another great endeavor, that has documented and
inspired the progress of the art and science of aeromodels over the
decades. Let's keep up the good work, and publicize it even more
widely, perhaps by posting a contents summary of all current and past
Sympo's as a resource on the NFFS website ?

The Science Olympiad is a fantastic success and is perhaps the best
promotion of F/F to young people through their school science
program. Look at its impact on the results at the recent Indoor F/F
World Championships, where these "newcomers" almost beat out the
"experts" at their own game, from a standing start ! But the Science
Olympiad is virtually never publicized ? Not by Model Aviation and
hardly at all by NFFS. This should be front page news every where we
can get it, and in the popular media not just for modelers (TV, Cable
and Radio News and local interest programming, Popular Science and
engineering magazines, School and Youth Publications and websites !)

NFFS should consider attending public aviation events with a
promotional booth. The AMA Show, held in January at the Ontario
Convention Center, CA, has gone from strength to strength with now
over 10,000 visitors. A 10 x 10 ft booth costs $100 for a SIG.
Volunteers who man the booth get in free and you can fly indoor free
flight models during the Show. AMA also attends the week-long
Oshkosh, WI, Fly-In, and does a great job promoting model flying to
all the families and kids there. F/F is a natural first step. We
should be there too.

What else to change - don't get me started !

As for the "REDUCED" entry fees, offered by NFFS at National
Contests, this should win a Nobel award for spin-doctoring of the
highest order ! Roughly translated, this means that NFFS members
will narrowly avoid paying the grotesquely inflated, massively
disproportionate fiscal burden of $40, to be levied on all those
innocent modelers who show up to fly and who are not presently
counted amongst our ranks ! Why not then charge these outcasts $100
each for this privilege and make some real money, from anyone stupid
enough to want to fly Free Flight with us. That should drive them
away smarting from our F/F hospitality for good. What ever are we
thinking here ?

Consider a junior with a paper round, or a retired modeler returning
again to the ranks, how will they react to such exorbitant fees ? I
think they will simply go home in disgust. This is not the US Team
Selection Finals, or a World Cup Open International, this is for a
Dakota biplane target time event, or for Nostalgia straight tow A/1,
a Pee Wee 30 or Jetex event. Wow ! The models don't even cost 40
bucks. (What if FAI entry fees were raised, to cost more than the
model ?) The entry for such events should be FREE to all NON-NFFS
members - that's how to encourage modelers to come fly with us, swell
the event and have them actually enjoy the experience. Who knows,
they might even want to come back again sometime and choose to join
with us of their own free will.

Forcing someone to join NFFS, however unwittingly, is unlikely to
endear them to our organization. The AMA is equally wrong in
compelling all foreign visitors to now pay a year's membership for
the privilege of flying at just one contest. This sets a very bad
precedent globally. No other country in the World does this.
Instead they continue to recognize the reciprocal agreement between
all other Aero Clubs, as we should too. US modelers are still

welcomed overseas at their events, under this international
understanding, when we travel abroad. Imagine the effect on us, if
they reciprocated and required US modelers to join every National
Aero Club next time we take a modeling trip to see our good friends
in Old Europe !

And on another related topic, I was recently informed by a well
respected international modeling journalist (who offered to cover the
upcoming F/F World Champs in Argentina for Model Aviation) that the
AMA has notified him their policy now is NOT to cover modeling events
OUTSIDE of the US, and so NO THANKS to his offer ! Let me check my
surprise meter - yes, it's still at zero ! So AMA members shouldn't
hold their breath waiting to read of Jim Richmond and the US Junior
Team members recent successes in Romania any time this millennium, or
perhaps instead it will appear in their High School Gazette ?
(Unless of course, it will be in the new Model Aviation NFFS SIG
pages ?)

So let's hear from others out there. We should have at least 1,999
other opinions.

If there's enough ozone around to have that strong an effect on rubber,
think what it's doing to people. An environmental checkup would seem
like a good idea.

Below is the 2005 Junior F1P / Cyclon motor program. Any junior who is
interested in trying out for the Junior FAI Free Flight Team program may
utilize this program. We have made the program plan as simple as possible
to encourage junior flyers and their parents or supporters to sign up. The
goal is to support new or present junior power flyers for the upcoming 2006
team selection and also the 2008 team selection. Please read the program

Junior F1P / Cyclon Motor Program

2005 Junior Program

Stage 1
Provide F1P rule information and general model information along with plans
of the AstroStar model. The information and support portions of this
program will provide valuable practical aid. The intent of Stage 1 is to
introduce the 8-13 years old FF flyers to Junior FAI FF Team program.

Stage 2
Provide F1P rule information and general model information along with an F1P
AstroStar kit designed by Terry Thorkildsen or a F1P Maverick kit designed
by Tom Hutchinson. Both of these models meet the F1P rules for wing area
and wing span requirements. The intent of Stage 2 is to provide a model for
the Junior that can fly with their own motor or have a model to qualify for
Stage 3.

Stage 3
In addition to the information and support portion of this program, this
stage provides an incentive by awarding a free Cyclon .061 engine to those
who build a F1P model worthy of this engine. The intent of this Stage is
for the 12-18 years old FF Junior=B9s with 2006 and 2008 Junior FF Team
aspirations to start flying F1P and participate in the 2006 team selection.
The first six Juniors that demonstrate that they have built an F1P structure
judged to be "flight worthy" and meet the minimum requirements will receive
a new Cyclon .061 (1 cc) engine with tools.

The Junior flyer and family will submit F1P Airframe Completion form (see
attached) to the Administrator. The engines will be awarded on a first come
basis to December 31, 2005. The engine will be shipped approximately two
weeks after the review of the model and an award given. The Administrator
will communicate who has been awarded an engine and the status of the number
of engines available for award via email and SEN.

In the case that the number of qualified applications exceeds the number of
available engines, then the models that best fulfill the items below will be
awarded the engines. Additional financial support will be sought to fulfill
the addition engine needs. Current donations allow the award of six .061
Cyclon engines.

The engine is to be returned if the F1P model is not flight ready within 3
months of receiving the engine. Only one engine per modeling family. The
engine is to be used only in an F1P model for the 2006 and 2008 Junior Team
selection program. Juniors who received a motor for the 2004 Junior team
program will be eligible for another motor.

Flight Worthy:
The Administrator will make final determination of Flight Worthy. This
decision will be based on an evaluation of the airframe with components,
covered or uncovered directly by the Administrator when possible or
indirectly from inputs from other experienced FAI power flyers.

Program Entry:
- For Junior FAI flyers that will be under the age of 19 throughout the
entire calendar year of 2006 are eligible.
- Submit a Junior FAI FF Team Selection Application, see the NFFS web page,

- Submit a Junior F1P Registration Form of interest. (see attached)

Upon the receipt of a completed Junior F1P Application, a start-up package
with event rules, recommended plan, model designs, model plans, applicable
web sites, etc will be sent to the Junior=B9s home address.

Support for the Junior Program Entry:
If so requested on the Junior F1P Registration Form, every effort will be
made to link the interested Junior flyer with an experienced power FF flyer
via Team Selection Committee, FF Clubs, NFFs and SCAT Web site (SEN).

Administration:
Walt Ghio is administrator for the Junior F1P/Cyclon Program. Walt will
coordinate distribution of the Cyclon motors, AstroStar kits and Maverick
kits to the qualified Juniors.

Supporters:
The AstroStar kits will be produced by Bob VanNest and the Maverick kits
produced by Joe Wagner. The Florida Modelers Association, Magnificent
Mountain Men, Max Men, Sierra Eagles, Southern California Aero Team and
Stockton Gas Model Association, clubs have committed to supporting this
program financially. Additional support and assistance is welcomed. Please

Sierra Championships

The Sierra Championships will be held the weekend of April 2-3 in Sacramento
at Waegell Field. This is an American's Cup contest for F1ABC and F1GHJ.
F1ABC will be held Saturday the 2nd starting at 8:30am. F1GHJ will be held
Sunday the 3rd starting at 9:00am. Entry fee $10 with a field rental of $5.
Plaques will be awarded to the winners.

Along with the FAI events, National Cup events HLG,CHLG, P-30, 1/2A Gas,
1/2A Nostalgia and A-B-C Nostalgia Combined will be flown on Saturday. Old
Time Rubber, Open Rubber, A-B-C-D Gas, Starduster X and Classic Power will
be held Sunday along with RC Old Timer. Junior events will be held for all
events. These are Category III with the contest starting at 8:00am and
ending at 3:30pm each day. Entry fee $5 with a field rental of $5.
Merchandise will be awarded to the winners.

On Saturday night the NCFFC Award Banquet will be held at Vince's Italian
Restaurant: 8901 Elk Grove-Florin Rd., Elk Grove, 916-685-2161. We would
like to invite any contestants in the Sierra Championships to join us for

Tapered wings with sweep

Does anyone know a simple way to calculate the diagonal ribs in a tapered
swept wing? I am not thinking of ribs parallel to the centreline but those
at right angles to the leading edge. What I am thinking of doing is reducing
the root chord to a number of stations say 2 or 3 inches out but still
parallel to the C/L, each 1/2" apart, say.
On the plan , I then plan(!) to draw a line at right angles to the LE and
where it crosses each of these intermediate root chord reductions (see
above), lift off the coordinates (or physical measurements) top and bottom
for this rib at right angles to the LE. Do the same at the tip and then just
use the simple sandwich way of obtaining the ribs between root and tip.

But is there a simpler method?

My apologies to all Scat club members for my accidentally, in a moment of
thoughtlessness, letting be written the term "Maxmen Banquet". The Scat
police have been all over me ever since this error was published. The
correct term of course is the "SCAT America's Cup Banquet", produced
entirely by the Scat club and indeed there is no such thing as the "Maxmen
Banquet" (opps sorry, did it again). Never mind that it occurs right in the
middle of the Maxmen contest, money for tickets is paid to the Maxmen
contest director, and the Banquet is used for Maxmen announcements. Of
course if I had any brains I would have noticed the huge banner above Jim
Parker's head proclaiming "SCAT AMERICA'S CUP BANQUET". So warning to all
that Scat and Maxmen are two separate organizations and not one in the same
as I had erroneously thought. Of course if I went to a few Scat meetings I
might know what's going on....

Since I will likely be excommunicated from the Scat club for this grevious
sin, are there any Maxmen out there willing to adopt a poor orphaned F1A
flyer? :-)
