The 2003 Patterson FAI Contest was held at Lost Hills in fine weather on
Nov 15&16.
The entry was very good, with 55 fliers making 75 entries in the 6 events.
The Mini events were held Sat from 7:30-11:15 with FOs ~4:30pm.
The format for ABC was 10 rounds, with 5 on Sat from 11am-4pm,
then 5 on Sun from 7:30am-12:30, followed by FOs as reqd.
Extended Max performance rounds were the 5th & 6th for ABC.
Mostly overcast skies graced our flights most of Sat & Sun, with light and
variable drifts for the most part. The western range was
not visible early Sun, with the ceiling about 1000ft.

Konkurs in Poland

We receoived a long e-mail in Polish about a major
modelling event with participation from many disciplines.
We were relcutant to publish this because it was hard
to understand as we do not handle accented characters well
to say nothing that out Polish is somewhat limited.

Dear Sirs;

A few years ago I saw a special on the discovery channel attributing =
to the inflatoplane article described in a related website.
The inflatoplane was designed as a spy plane / recon plane during WWII .
To bring agents in behind enemy lines undetected. It could land on
either land or water and be folded up to hide in the brush until it
could later be retrieved.
The film clip was quite interesting and with the ammount of
enthusiasts now involved with ultralight aviation and alternative
transportation it could prove a very popular idea with of course
modifications for todays standards.
If you have any further information regarding this plane I would
really like to learn more. Thank You !

Buntero for Sale

When starting F1A again Mr. Lee Hines gave me some good advice on
planes. L'il Al is really a super bird. Buntero is quite simillar.
However, I can't get enough flying time for this bird as W.European
flying weather is not really suited for a plane with this wingspan (2525
mm) Because of this I decided this plane is better off with somebody
else. So it's for sale!!!
Either with or without the electronics. The electronics consist of a BM
timer, a Multiplex digital speed servo for the stab and a Graupner
DS281, digital servo, for the fin.

F1C Brake housings For Sale.

Quality machined aluminum Brake Housings for the Nelson 15. This is a
machined housing that includes the drilling and tapping for a 2-56 bolt to
clamp the housing in place. The front of the housing has been machined for
the cocking/locking of the brake wire arm. They are complete with the
exception of the 2-56 bolt, needing the brake wire installed, and drilling
the hole to anchor the brake wire. (.038 wire is recommended). They also
have an accompanying aluminum tapered cone for expanding the brake wire coil
to slide over the brake shoe for measuring the bends.

I use them myself, a quality housing.

Palm stuff

There has been a nunber of questions about the right kind of palm Pilots for th
e
Black and Red magic timers. These need a a palm with a serial port. The newest
bottom of the line model the Zire , does not have this capability. Some other
Zires do, although I have not tested them personally.

The palm Factory store and a number of others are selling older model palms for
very low prices. it is possible to get a M100 for 39.99 and M105 for 49.99.
These prices change all the time. I sam a more fancy M500 for only 79.99 the
other day. What is important is to get a monochrome screem. Color screens are
harder to read in bright sunlight.

Looking on e-bay you can find many other sources, some other close out houses
advertize on e-bay.

Looking at the latest models. The older version of the Black magic program and
the Red magic program will not run on the latest Tungsten and Zire models.

I have a Blackmagic version that will. This can be used for RedMagic timers. Ne
w
RedMagic models will be coming out shortly and the corresponding Palm program
will work on later models. this program will aslo work with earlier RedMagic
timers.

Speaking of close out places, in California, the 99 cent stores have after
market palm cables - made by belkin for the Palm IIIxe and the M100/m105 -
these are different cables - for Only 99 cents [plus tax].

Speaking of the Palm IIIxe - this is the prefferred model if you are looking
for a simple monochrome Palm. Thses have a bigger screen than the
m100/m105v and appear to be more reliable.

Formally, the deadline to nominate a model for the Ten Models of the
Year is fast approaching (December 1). We still have a number of good
models from last year, as well as a new crop this year. But the door is
always open for an outstanding design. In particular, I am hoping to get
nominations for a beginner model, a CO2 model as well as models with
unusual technical features.

Unusual ideas will be considered. For example, last year a rubber motor
winder was candidates for a special award. Electronic timer and control
mechanisms are an intriguing proposition!

Nominations are informal, and you can self-nominate. A initial sub-
mission can be crude, serving as a starting point. The real work starts
once a design is selected, articulating the design's innovations in a
plan, pictures and text.

The Ulms
========

As you will have read in a previous SEN Patty and Al Ulm's house
was destroyed in the recent California wild fires. I saw Al recently on
flying field - he was easy to pick out as he was the guy with the new jeans
and jacket - all his clothes had gone so he did not have the 'old'
clothes we wear when we go flying. He said that they had
receieved many words of support and encouragement from
their friends in the modelling community and it was very much
appreciated.

The following is a portion of my reply to Bob Perkin’s request for 2004 AmCup
Sanction for the Ohio-FF Annual. I think it might be of interest and use to ot
her CDs and clubs.

Thank you for your request. Here is process for adding AmCup contests and the i
ssues we discuss during this time.

Tom Coussens and I take the recommendations we get through the year and create
a draft calendar of the next year, ie we are the first selection level. We then
submit that draft to the SCAT club for discussion and then vote at the SCAT Ho
liday party-- this year it is Dec 13, 2003. The result is the official AmCup co
ntest list for the following year. Many of the dates are not yet firm but the A
mCup contests are established. We do not attempt to sort out conflicting contes
t dates, the CD / Clubs strive to this on their own to maximize attendance to t
heir contests.

First Issue: The AmCup has grown to 30 contests. By club vote, we have decided
to cap the number of sanctions to 30. Roughly speaking, this is a contest on av
erage every other week. We have a process to evaluate the low attendance conte
sts-- a three year running average. At this time, one contest is not applying f
or future sanction and so one potential spot has opened. The deleted AmCup is f
rom the N.W. (Harts Lake contest) and so the Sierra Eagles have requested to us
e it. One item many people lose sight of is the primary mission of the AmCup is
to promote FAI FF through the requirement to travel to other sites in order to
win this nationally recognized award. Ever increase number of AmCup contest wo
uld be contrary to this goal.

Second issue: Balance of E-C-W contest. This issue is most controversial-- shou
ld it be by E-C-W geography (and who decides the map?) or should it be by conce
ntration of the flyer population? The 2003 distribution is EE-7, C-10 and W-13.
My eyeball sees this distribution some where between the two. A look at the hi
story of AmCup winners (old AmCup scores are now on the NFFS web page) demonst
rates the current distribution is good and therefore the distribution of contes
t is good.

Third issue: Over the past 3 years, we have put pressure on the contests that h
eld only the open or mini events. This year (2003) all AmCup contests scheduled
both Open and Mini events. I believe the results for these contests have been
positive.

Contest report wanted

Looking at the results of the Bern Eurofly contest, I wonder( as perhaps
others do as well,) what the weather conditions were and also the contest
organisations in view of the unusually high max times. They certainly
reduced the number of flyoff contestants and must have provided some
memorable viewing of multiple models high up in the calm conditions.

It looks as if there might be a recipe here for the future of the other
World Cup contests - and even the W/C itself?
