Roger,
I have seen a couple of inquiries lately about F1P plans on SEN. I can
provide astrostar 404 plans if anyone is interested. It is a Terry Thorkidsen
design, the drawing was done by Craig Cusick. The cost would be $10.00 includin
g
postage. The plan would be mailed rolled in a tube and the profit from the sale

would go toward to Jr. Program.
At this time I have two sets of laser cut ribs with plans for $25.00. If
there are any Jr. or Sr. interested, they should contact Jim Parker at

Old Kits
=========

I got a phone call from Richard Swegerl of Metford OR. He has
a number of FF kits of the 40's and 50's from Harry Lowe. These
include a Struck Sky Buggy, Comet Sailplane, Zipper, Jaguar, Southerner Mite ,.
plus some plans - call him on 541 773 5479 if you are interested.


Covering with tissue

Roger,
To answer the questions in the last SEN, I would advise the author of the
request to try a Google search. I typed in "japanese tissue covering model
airplanes" and found two very good articles that will probably do quite nicely
for
him. I was motivated to do a quick search after I wrote in about silkspan
last week. All you need to know about silkspan was already on the net.

My normal method of covering is to coat the framework with nitrate dope and
brush acetone through the tissue while it is in contact with the doped
framework. For some of my Science Olympiad students, we use a gluestick as th
e
tissue adhesive. I think Art Ellis' kids also use a gluestick and are able to

water shrink the tissue afterwards, although I have never tried that myself. I

have found that if the gluestick adhesive dries out during the covering process

(from working too slow) it can be reactivated by brushing a little water
through the tissue. I have never tried so-called "white glues" for covering.

After a couple or three years of campaigning a model, I usually strip the
tissue using acetone and plastic wrap. Acetone won't loosen water-based adhesi
ves
(white glue).

I've heard it said many times that butyrate dope has inferior adhesion for
tissue covering compared to nitrate, but have never tested it myself. Could
this be the modelers' equivalent of an urban myth?

I don't know of anyone who has tried to convert a Dakota to RC--but a few
Years back one of the US magazines published an RC design called The Osprey (I

think that was the name) which was essentially a scaled up Dakota. It was most

probably in RC Modeler--but a search on the web for that name should get you
a scaled RC Dakota.

The shiney side is the up side. The grain will run across the narrow width.
Two coats of dope to the framwork to be covered is the most common method.
Then shrink with water or alcohol. There are paper glues such as "UHU" that
work quite well to attach tissue and can be obtained at stationary stores
like Staples or Office Depot.

Here is my answer. I also send it to Ian Kaynes, and I am going to
transfer your message to him as it is an interesting situation which may
happen during a World or Continental Championship.

According to the existing rule and to the report you have got from the
timekeeper, your decision was good (to my opinion!)

I was trying to understand how a model which dethermalises on the line
can then be free... I guess there has been an intent to release the
model, so the hook unlatched, then the ring was still in the unlatched
hook when the model DTed and then the model got free of the line and
came down within 13 seconds...
The timekeeper must have really good eyes to see all that which may
happen against the sun, or quite far from the starting line...
It is pretty sure that this is an unacceptable situation with a rule
which is very difficult to apply.
Suppose the timekeeper would have say:" I am sorry but the model DTed
just after the pennant went out of the model... then it was a 13 seconds
flight.

In this typical case, this situation is the result of a timer failure
which is probably because of something wrong somewhere... which is not
acceptable at a World or Continental Championship level (also World cup
contest level).
For me, the only way to solve this problem in the future is the ban of
the 20 second attempt rule.

I guess Ian Kaynes will also give you his opinion which may be different
from mine...

It is getting cold here (freezing every night) and we prepare to go to
the Alps for the winter season!

Hello Pierre,

I hope that you and your family are well.

Last weekend we had our Arizona Free Flight Championships in Eloy. The
weather was great except for some wind in the first two rounds F1ABC on
Saturday. The high temperature during the day was 28=B0C.

I was in charge of the F1A fly-off when we had a controversy which
concerned Regulation 3.1.5.f. This is what happened: Andrew Barron
accelerated his glider to launch and when he was getting close to
release towline angle the model made a small diameter loop and with the
stabilizer at 35-40=B0 negative angle landed after 13 seconds. I
questioned the time keepers (one was Jim Parker) what they had observed
and they told me that the model had "dethermalized" on the line and
because of it came free of the launching cable. Andrew Barron's glider
has electronic controls and has different stabilizer settings for
tow-up. Instead of increasing the negative angle of the stab slightly
the linkage released the stab completely to "DT".

My ruling was that because this occurred before the model was released
from the tow line the "dethermalizing" took place before the flight
started he could repeat this unsuccessful attempt. His second attempt
was good and he won the fly-off.

Afterwards we all discussed this and everybody agreed with this
decision. What are your thoughts? We all know how this regulation
originated but the question is: "what is dethermalizing?". If a model
does not come out of "bunt" after the launch and hits the ground in a
few seconds it definitely came out of any thermal quickly. You could
definitely argue that the model dethermalized.
