this weekend, Jan 3 - 4. Four rounds on Saturday, starting at 1200, and

The Isaacson Winter Classic

We invite all of you to the first Lost Hills contest of the year!
This is a week before the World Cup, Maxmen International. Many flyers stay
the entire week. This may also be the only F1E (FF slope soaring) event
held in the USA! In addition to the FAI events, there will be Gollywock,
P-30, catapult glider (it's back!) and Nostalgia Wakefield.

Jap tissue grain

I was interetsed in the various comments on the grain of Jap tissue. My
usual procedure is to the take hold of the sheet at one corner and try to
tear it down one side. If it tears easily ,then the grain is parallel to the
tear. Conversely, if you try to tear it at 90 degrees to the first try on
the same sheet, you will find it very difficult to get a clean tear, the
actual tear zig-zagging along. This is what I have been doing all through
the years. Even the current Jap from Mike Woodhouse, the only source that I
use at present, can be treated and reacts in this way.

On the second point, I agree, the gloss side up is the best.

Arizona FF Champs FAI Report

Arizona Free Flight Champs, Eloy, AZ

The Arizona FF Champs held December 6 &7 got off to a brisk start on Saturday
morning with winds that were considerably stronger than normal. Round one
drift became severe about half way thru the round. Round two was limited to two
minutes. Thereafter, regular three minute rounds continued. The America's Cup
designation helped draw several people from considerable distances as you can
see by the names in the report below. Sunday saw better conditions, but the
fly-off rounds were delayed for about two hours because of sudden, severe winds.
The coupe fly-off will be held on January 15th prior to the SWR.

What? No grain in Esaki tissue?

George Shroedter told us:

"Someone here recently mentioned that one should pay attention to the grain
of Japanese tissue. I don't know what
tissue he was referring to, but having imported many thousands of sheets of
Esaki tissue from Japan during the 18 years I ran Champion Model Products, I
can say with certainty that Esaki tissue is a multi-layer tissue. As a
result, it has NO grain."

With all due respect, George, you could have fooled me, as well as a bunch
of guys from the Free Flight Mailing List, all of whom a firm believers in
Esaki grain. I've found the grain in every sheet (including Sig) I've used
over the past few decades by tearing near the edge of the sheet along one
dimension, then the other. One way will tear in a straight line. That's the
grain direction. Tear at 90 degrees to this line and the tear will be ragged
and irregular. That's cross grain. If there was no grain, both tears would
both be either ragged or straight.

Hank Sperzel, who many of you know, had this to say on the FFML:

"Bob, I have some of the old Champion Model Products Esaki tissue and some
of the new. I concur with you. ALL the sheets have grain that you can see if
held up to the light."

Hi all,

This year I have reached into the Israeli national junior team and thinking
about buying a short model.
I am very confused about which wing is the best and maybe some one can
assist me.
Vasily's model, the Baby AL seems to me as the best choice right now.
Still, I am not sure at all which model is the best for me.
If any one can recommend me on the Baby AL or maybe try to make me think
about something different I will be very glad to hear.

I'm not especially recommending any particular F1A,...although
I clearly have to take a chauvanistic point of view and say that
as long as it has a Black or Red Magic timer it has to be great !!

That aside ..

You need to make the decision but these are some ideas ...

Talk to the supplier of the model to see which is the best for your flying
conditions. Do you want a thermal model ? a still air flyoff, windy
or all around general purpose model ? What other models do you have in your
box and how will this compliment them ?

Talk to others who have that model.

Look at the contest results.

I believe it is important to choose a model that has been flown sucessfully
by many others besides the original builder. This shows a model that
is not temperamental.

hey just in case anyone got a bunch of money for christmas and didn't
know what to buy me. there is a brand new monolith (fuzeyev) engine on
ebay it bids jan 7th.
search f1c and you should find it. oh by the way the bids start at $1000(ouch)
sort of makes VE and hummers seem cheap.
