It is with deep sadness that I report to you and all Southern Calif. Aero
Team members that Steve Geraghty passed away from this earth this morning
(Wednesday) at approximately 5:45 a.m. He was returning Tuesday morning to
San Jose from Idaho and suffered a life threatening viral infection, the
cause which has not yet been determined.

Steve was a strong member and supporter of the Oakland Cloud Dusters, SCAT,
NFFS, AMA and numerous FAI free flight team programs and world
championships. He most recently assisted me and Bill Vanderbeek in running
the Northern California Free Flight Championships earlier this month.

He leaves behind his wife Sharyn, stepson Jason, his sons Gerry and Jim, and
a sister in Southern California.

Nelson Plugs

I was wondering if others have been having problems with recent batches
of Nelson plugs seating firmly and sealing in their engines. The torque
when tightening the plugs feel mushy for the last 1/4 turn and bubbles
are evident around the base of the plug when leak checking the
installation. I was experiencing this problem quite severely with my KC
0.060 and was told that my head insert needed to be tapped deeper. I
borrowed a 11/33 X 32 bottoming tap from Bob Johannes and tapped the
hole as deep as possible. The plugs would still not seat properly. The
plugs appeared to be about 1/2 turn from seating when finger tight as
viewed from the combustion chamber end. After a complete comparison of
dimensions of old plugs which would seat and new plugs which wouldn't I
concluded that there was no reason for the condition.

The only difference I noted was that upper most thread on the new plugs
(closest to the hex) seamed to be poorly formed and blended into the
next thread. It appears to be a problem with roll forming. About 180
degrees of the upper thread was removed with a needle file and the plug
seated and sealed very nicely.

Has any one else experienced this problem and come to the same
conclusion. I have ordered a 11/32 X 32 die and will chase the threads
on all Nelson plugs.
