New Free Flight Magazine

"Free Flight Quarterly", a new FF magazine is to appear in the month of
October, 2001. "Free Flight Quarterly", FFQ, has been born out of the
desire of having an international English language magazine exclusively
devoted to Free Flight matters. Although FFQ may not be the only one of
this type, it will publish longer articles that by virtue of their
intrinsic interest or technical complexity are not published elsewhere.
Free Flight Quarterly follows in the tradition initiated by Andre
Schandel with "Vol Libre" in France, Bernd Schwendemann with
"Thermiksense", in Germany, and Ian Kaynes with "Free Flight News" in
England, all of them admirable efforts that have done much for the Free
Flight cause in the last decade or two. "Free Flight Quarterly" aspires
to be a truly international magazine, prompt to open its pages to
contributors from all countries. It is edited by a team that comprises
Jean Wantzenriether from France, Jan and Bill Pudney from Adelaide,
South Australia and Sergio Montes (chief editor), from Tasmania,
Australia. As the name implies, FFQ will appear four times a year and
can be obtained by subscription from the editorial offices:

FreiFlug Haus, 37 Windsor St.
Kingston Beach 7050
Tasmania, Australia

Contents of the first edition can be seen, together with the details of
subscription rates, in the magazine's website:

We look forward to your comments and suggestions.

World Champs, Bike transport

I am very pleased to see the World Champs are on and will be very much
looking forward to seeing everyone again. I have promised some motorcycles
for use as chase vehicles for some of the teams and I need some help moving
them from Sacramento to Lost Hills. Does anyone have capacity on a trailer
to take one or two cycles? They are the traditional Honda 90 and 110. I will
bring another with me. I can deliver in the general Sacramento area. The
"90" will be for sale after the Champs-not pretty but it's priced right at
$250 and should not need a ride home. Thanks. Mike McKeever at

Gentlemen

See attached the results of the Prima event held at Sculthorpe on 17/09/01.
The event was held at the same time as the Stonehenge Cup. The event was
spoiled by very strong winds, however the promised rain showers failed to
show up.

The event was run by Geoff Kent with technical assistance by Mr. Prima, Igor
Vivchar himself. I was scrutineer, as I choose to view the models on stand
off basis I was totally "unaware" of some of the extras (VIT and instant
start etc) employed by family Turnbull! Junior Daniel Billam frightened the
professionals with a first round max. David Beales kept the tension up by
crashing twice in the last round, when he could have won with a half decent
flight. Pat nearly beat husband Glynn but her last flight was o.o.s. behind
the airfield control tower.

Don't forget there is another event at the Croydon wakefield day in late
October. Also there is still time to get the the postal results for your
September efforts in to me.

When the whole thing concludes I will put a page on my web site, complete
with the photos that I have taken and that have been sent to me.

The Prima contest

The event took place on Barkston Heath on Sunday 24th September
being run alongside the Stonehenge cup. Ten flyers turned
up ready to give a crack, a couple retired before the event leaving
eight to fight it out. Due to the weather the contest was
limited to three x two-minute flights. The scores were as follows: -

Place Name First flight Second flight Third flight Total score
1 Ron Sabey 107 120 120 347
2 Derek Ridley 120 120 100 340
3 Daniel Billam (Junior) 116 103 120 339
4 David Beales 118 120 87 325
5 Manfred Hoffman 78 120 120 318
6 Igor Vivchar 120 120 0 240
7 John Whitby 70 66 70 210
8 Derek May 79 120 0 199

The proceedings were efficiently run by Geoff Kent. I had promised to
help but I was somewhat preoccupied up a tree recovering my F1B from its
last round max. Such was the interest and the enthusiasm we are
planning to run it again. So if you have a Prima get it ready!

Super Prima
===========

As a follow on to the above, I saw Mike Mulligan flying a Prima
with a few simple mods. Mike found that a standard Vivchar stabilizer
hammer will fit in the tail boom. this permits the addition of a VIT.
Also two additional arms can be easily added to the timer by drilling
two sets of holes on the timer arm mounting bracket. Mike looked
at adding a 3 position rudder as well as the VIT but
it proved to not be required. The VIT made a bid difference
in controlling the initial burst.

Could you publish this in the next SCAT?

My wife and I want to spend some days relaxing in Hawaii prior to the world
champs. We will be passing through LA International airport on Sep. 26 and
would prefer not to take the model box and equipment, but leave it with some
modeler. If anybody could pick it up at the airport it would be much
appreciated. If the planes are on schedule we have a window of about 3 hours
from 12:30 to 15:30.

Today in the Los Angeles Times there is a picture of items confiscated from
passengers encountering security. The smallest thing I saw was tweezers.
The competitors surely will have all kind of pointy things that may be
confiscated. Can you provide some assurance or recommendations for us to put
in the SCAT Electronic News for a successful transfer of necessary contents
for the competitors?

Bill, we will be putting out some information in a Bulletin and on the WC
web site shortly. At this time it is next to impossible to tell what each
airport will allow or not allow. Remember it is the departure airport that
will be the main problem, not the destination. Our competitors that just
left here after competition in the Helicopter World Championships did not
have too many difficulties. All tools etc, must be checked as baggage.
Nothing should be carried on.
