Hi, Roger

The damn computer died again but was resurrected long enough
to pick up mail. Must have got about seventy letters from
your fine site. Sure glad I'm a fast reader.

But the flawed computer keeps locking up so don't think
this window of opportunity will last long...perhaps I can
launch this letter before it crashes again.

It was neat hearing that Bob Mattes is back around. I'm
sure he would be pleased to know that I'm still using his
fine FAI sized fiberglass fuselages of some (thirty?)
years ago. I'm only hoping the supply of a 1/2 dozen or so
left will outlast me!

Our first MMM contest got rained and blown out this
weekend. Nothing unusual. At this time of year it is about
a fifty/fifty proposition.

Our small cadre of F1C fliers seem bummed out by the
expense and difficulties of trying to compete for a team
slot while being stuck out here in the mile high boondocks.
But, strange as it seems, there is still great interest in
the class. Ken Phair has three new ships ready to test. In
any case the design of high-performance power designs are
still being pursued with intensity....although there now
seems more time to raise up and look around to smell the
roses. This is okay with me 'cause my strongest suite has
been as an experimenter and innovator rather than a serious
competitor. (But true enough, I do enjoy winning once in a
while simply because it raises my testosterone level which
serves to keep me fired up)

Well, I feel on borrowed time. The screen is blinking at
me! I'm ready to toss it in the trash and get on with my
life.

Not much hope but still trusting this gets to you..........

Bill Gieskieng.

Hi Roger,
Please place the attached Chicago Aeronuts' bulletin into the SEN listing.
We typically have 75-80 contestants registered for the three contests held
on the last weekend in August. A review of the attendance over the last
three years shows that 120 different people have competed. It would be
great if they all show up at the same contest. This year, F1A attendance
may suffer because of the Jr World Championships. Andrew Barron and Art
Ellis probably won't be bringing the kids, so we old folks might have a
chance to win and gain some America's Cup points. If any of the people who
read the newsletter can't open the file, I'll be happy to mail them a
bulletin if they let me know their address.

A Down-and-Under query

Does anyone by chance know an Australian called Bruce de Chastel? Bruce
flies F3D (pylon racing) and was a member of the Australian team to the WC
last year in Sweden. I would appreciate a lead or, even better - his
e-mail.

A Cat Glider in the Lunch Box

Catapult Glider for Kids.

The suggestions to the query about catapult gliders are good ones. I would
like to add one more model to the list, John Oldenkamp's Lunchbox. My son
(4) flies them set up for both cat. and HLG. They have proven very durable.

Two with due respect for John's design, I would make two suggestions for
improving the lunchbox:
1. instead of cutting the graceful curves used in the fuselage profile, cut
the stock in a straight taper, from 1/2" at the nose to 3/16" at the tail.
This will set up proper incidence. Also make the fuselage 1/4" longer than
is shown so that part sticks out beyond the trailing edge of the stab for a
grip. Add a wire hook for the catapult band about 1" back from the nose.

2. Instead of making the wing from balsa, make it from foam meat trays.
You will get a thicker airfoil at a weight savings of 1 - 2 grams. Sand as
you do a balsa wing with thread reenforcement on the leading edge. Be
careful not to inhale the dust. Because the Lunchbox has an elyptical style
wing with an aspect ratio of three(!) it can take the force of a catapult
launch. the wings can also be nice colors as meat trays come in white,
black, red, yellow, and green.

[Ross - Where is the plan published ?]
