This weekend the Patterson was held at Lost Hills
in perefect conditions. Both F1C and F1B going to the 9 minute
round under a clouldleass and windless sky ...

At the Patterson contest Pierre Brun, the current SCAT President had a
serious motorcyle accident. Pierre will be in Memorial [a Kaiser] Hospital
in Bakersfield for probably the rest of the week. Pierre is an enthousiastic
supporter of FAI free flight and a good friend to us all. He and
Sylvia could use some of the that support and friendship from us at this
time. I'm not sure if they will be getting their e-mail for a few

Texas had been lashed by continuous rain storms for the 3 weeks prior to our
contest. However our contest weekend provided us with overcast days with
light to moderate winds and only a few spits of rain. Our biggest obstacle
was the wind direction which forced us to fly across the airfield runways
and kept our flights at 2 min maxes.
The flyoff in F1A and F1C were held at 7:00am Sunday morning. The wind was
light and straight up the runways. We flew with a 10 minute max and although
none of us made it, a flight of 8 to 9 minutes would easily have stayed on
the airfield. In fact Henry Spence's winning flight of 5 minutes and 20
seconds landed at less than the halfway point of the field
The flyoff in F1J was flown at noon Sunday, between 2 thunderstorms which
threatened to come over the airfield but actually skirted us and provided us
with a great window in which we flew a 5 min flyoff flight. Steve Spence's
winning flight which did not DT until 6 min 15 sec, landing less than 100
feet off the end of the airfield.
Our Saturday night award dinner was well attended at a wonderful Mexican
restaurant. The flying was great and no models were lost. We had a great
time. Come join us next year at one or both of our American Cup contests,
The 8th Annual Spring Cup in April, and/or the 17th Annual Autumn Cup which
will be held the 2nd weekend of November, 2001. We hope to see your there.

For all who are interested:
The Austrian national team for 2001 is selected.
The race for the third team slot in F1A was open up the end.
Even in mid October 3 persons had a definite chance to make it.
The National champs on Oct. 21/22 saw Erwin Pacher as F1A-champion,
giving him the best position, yet not decisive, since two more national
contests had to be flown.
Surprise national champion in F1B was Klaus Salzer, as always flying
his all-balsa 'WELLES', and beating Horst Wagner in the 7min flyoff.
No F1C championship flown due to lack of participants.
So that will be the Austrian team

Just a short note to mention that all those intending to travel to the
Australian Free Flight Championships in 2001 at Narrandera should think
of booking their accommodation ASAP, Narrandera plays host to the yearly
Hot Rod Association competition at Easter and generally leave little
accommodation available in the town.
Other towns within good range of the flying field include Urana and
Lockhart, both have motel as well as hotel style accommodation.
