Hello from the Great White North, Canada that is. I am looking for
information about the results from the World Championships in Isreal. I
have a friend over there on the Canadian Team and his name is Jim
Brooks. He flies Wakefield, (I think). I have looked over your web
site and can't find any current information.

Please let me know when you will have the results and I will check back
later.

The one contest left out of today's mailing was the Hoosier Cup, to be held
at Muncie with Mark Wood as the CD. The dates are Sept 11 and 12. I know,
because I am the contest coordinator for Distr VI. The AMA contest calendar
for that date shows only the CIA contest with AMA and nostagia events and
Phil Sullivan as CD. The Hoosier Cup sanction was sent in too late to make
it into the calendar.

Note that we still have not got the Nats results - with all classes
[JSO combined as is needed for the America's Cup] and to correct Coupe results
- Mr Hines if you wish to further your efforts to get the results
and send them to us in fornat we can print it would be appreciated - and we
will even include the cat or HLG if you send that too!]


Builder of the model rule for FAI

I think elimination of the builder of the model rule for FAI events has
greatly diminished the sport. A large part of the sport in the past was
designing, building, and trimming your own original design. I am really
surprised at how passive free-flighters are on this issue. At model meets of
the past you could identify various original model designs with the flier. At
the Nats this last summer, I saw numerous FAI models hanging in the museum of
historic FAI fliers of the past. Will models of the future hanging in the
museum, simply read manufactured by x and flown by y.
The current direction has been set and only time will tell how it will play
out in the future.

There has been much discussion on this in the past.
Most active flyers think that the benefit of removing
the BOM rule has caused more people to participate
and this out weighs the disadvanatges.

Part of the reason for this is that there many factors
contributing to winning competitions and the
model is only one of those factors.

It is important to note however that most World Champions
do in fact fly their 'own' models .. hopefully we'll
see how that pans out this year in Israel !

Got caught 400 miles from my Hoerner books when the Bird Aero question
arose. Below is a nice reply from Richard Johnson, possibly the most famous
sailplaner, who gathered the data that appears in Hoerner.

Pg 7-22 and Fig 37 in the old FLUID-DYNAMIC DRAG has the following info re
Buzzards:
Soaring mode, feathers spread v=8.5 m/s Cl=1.3 Rn=140,000
Gliding mode, v=9to23 m/s Cd min=.009 Cd wetarea=.0034 Rn=200,000
L/D max=22 @ 13.8m/s Cl~.5

Span=1.44m
Aspect ratio=5.7
W=2.3kg
Area =.37sq meter

Of course SYMPO 88 had the Hans Gremmer article on tip feathers but how can
you top a calibrated sailplane following the birds.
