This years King Orange saw 3 days of absolutely gorgeous weather. It was a
little cool in the mornings but the highs were in the lower 60's the first
day and it got warmer each day ending up near 80 on the last day. Winds were
calm in the morning and were calm to about 8 MPH max during the day. We flew
from the same spot all 3 days. Thermals were somewhat tricky, often be very
strong but small in size.

An outstanding performance was put in by David Ellis winning both F1A and
F1B. F1B was won in a flyoff with Tom Ioerger. They both did the 5 minute
flyoff round at the end of the 7 rounds and the next morning David bested Tom
352 seconds to 241 seconds. Al And Tina Brush came from California with a
chance to win the Americas Cup if he won F1B, but the tricky air caught him
in the 3rd round and he finished 4th.

Another very strong performance by one of our Juniors was put in by John
Barron as he finished 2nd in F1A and 6th in F1B. The USA Junior Free Flight
Team is looking very strong for this summers World champs.

Chuck Markos was successful in his efforts to win the Americas Cup in F1H
even though he finished 2nd to John Bailey. John is from Great Britain so
this will give Chuck first place points in Americas Cup scoring.

The FAI "Ironman" award would have to go to John Bailey. John Flew F1A, F1G,
F1H, and F1J. Ending up with two first, a third, and a fifth.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish you and all of the
modellers who read your SEN a very happy New Year from the first
country in the world to see in the new millenium with the sunrise (
providing it is not too cloudy) AND I would also like to say a very big
thanks to you for producing the journal. By my count I make it there
were over 138 issues this year and I do know how busy you are both at
work and other programs ( including flying) but to have seen you after
getting home late at night, or getting up very early in the morning, sitting
down and compiling the whole thing, I want you to know that I am sure
there are many like me who do appreciate your efforts despite some
folk who seem to dislike some of the statements you have made. Keep
on doing it if possible, who knows you may well get more and more on
the list, and this can only make it a better sounding board for data
discussion and exchange.

New Zealand Nationals results:-

The Nationals were flown at Christchurch this year with a smaller
entry number and as a consequence the three FAI classes were
combined. Results were:-

1. John Malkin F1B

2. John Harte F1A

3. Craig King F1A

John.

[ At the ime we got this New Zealand was already into the next Millenium
and John Malkin and returned from the NZ Nats to celebrate Y2K at home
and sent us the communication from the next Millenium.

I must admit that I would have liked to been at the NZ Nats year if
tradition was followed. This is my old flying buddy Dick Willard
putting down his fiddle just before midnight to pick up the handle
of a jet u/c model to bring in the year in a spectacular fashion ]

Luddite mail that is - I assume the postman came in his mule drawn
cart to deliver to me my "Team Luddite" t-shirt from the Luddite
sargant-at-arm Bob White. .. Does this mean I have to get my
old "WakeUp" F1B out of storage for the Desert Challenge ?

Thank you Bob.

Speaking of T-Shirts, coming out soon is the SCAT 40th anniversary
t-shirt. It is some what fitting that this shirt to celebrate the founders
of SCAT and the past 40 years of FAI Free Flight was designed by
Vlad Andriukov, one of our youngest members who will play a big part in
our next 40 years. The only problem we are having is choosing which
od the great designs to use.... but after flying in the finals at
palm bay, Seguin, Minnesota, this is an easy problem. So look for this
at the SCAT 40th banquent and the MaxMen International. It's a must
for wardrobe of the best dressed sportsman of the new millenium.
