SCAT Electronic News 10 February 1998 - Special Max Men Item

Isaacson Winter Classic Report
=============================

Firstly the most important non-flying item is that the best entrance to Lost
Hills in bad weather is the entrance from Highway 46. It is 3 miles from
the Holloway road. [not about 2 miles as we said previously]. There is a
short radio antenna on the south side of 46 just opposite the entrance.

The next item is that there are a few sink holes that during the excessive
rain accumulate water . If you see pools of water lying in what appears
top be a flat , slight greener grassy area - do not drive on to that area .. you
will sink up to your wheel hubs.

On the positive side even though Saturday was not a big sucess because in
the morning when people should have been flying they were discussing the
state of the field, .. then it rained so we only got a few flight on Saturday's
events. The weekend turned out good in the end. In the F1H glider
technology race Brian Van Nest was trimming out his new bunter. This
model has mainly Stamov parts. It looked nice after only a few flights.
Victor Stamov and Randy Weiler were working on two new models that
Victor brought over with him. Some parts looked familar to me as they
apparantly they came fron Igor Vivchar's shop. One of the gliders is
destined for Igor's daughter Veronica. This model flew well too. Randy
was doing most of the flying and Victor trimmimng. Randy complained that
it was too light and did not pull like his F1A.

However the Traditional Winter Classic barbeque was held in the parking
lot of the now days Inn. Randy Weiler did his usual good job of flipping
burgers.

Sunday dawned with not rain, and slightly reduce number of contestants.
The wind was dead calm in the morning and increased slightly but not
excessively.

In F1A no one maxed out.

In F1B 8 of the 14 contesnts maxed. At the beginning of the day it looked
like it was going to be just wind it and throw it. But when I got a 3 mins 6
sec flight I realized that I needed to take more care. Thermals were very
hard to pick. There seemed be only a degree change in temperature through
out the whole day.

Max Men Update
=============

The contest organizers have reviewed the situation in light of the El Nino
weather, the Winter Classic and conditions on the field. The forecast for
the next few days is good with sun and light breeze. They have received
good advice from our neighbours at the Holloway Gypsum Plant.

They plan to hold the contest as scheduled, from the usual flight line.

Contestants should plan on entering from the Highway 46 entrance. This
entrance is 3 miles west of the Holloway Road turn off on Highway 46.
They have contingency plans should this not be possible. In this case they
will post information at the field entrance.

Do NOT plan on using the normal Holloway Road entrance unless notified
that it is OK. The other entrance on Holloway Road north of the regular
entrance is currently the worst of all the entrances and should not be used.

About a mile to the north of the flight line there is a newly planted barley
field. Treat this with respect, do not ride your bike across it.

There are sheep on the field near Highway 46. This is about 3 miles from
the flight line. Wmust maintain a good relationship with the shepherds.
The shepherd uses electric fences. Do not ride your bike throught the fence
as you will probably damage both yourself and the fence.

For those of you who do not believe that July Tan 2 is the greatest ..there
is an ad in the latest FFn from Laurie Barr [a leading British F1D flyer]
offering 100 Pounds [not $] for a pound of July Tan 2 . [ If Steve Brown
has it and you don't .. what's the point in going to the Roumanian Salt Mines
for the F1D WC.]

Norm,
I have some 1/4" Dunlop rubber here that I am prepared to
sacrifice at a modest price for your Gollywock!
