E36/S’s Wattage Issue

On the face of it, E36/S is a simple mini event – 36” span, 120 gram min weight, DT only (although AR is trivial to incorporate) and a 2 cell Lipo (without a mAh limit). As long as motors were weak it worked fine with a 2-minute max, a 10/5 seconds motor run in regular/flyoff flights. (S increments flyoff maxes.) In the absence of technological change, E36/S could have remained a tame mini even like G.

But motor’s efficiency (such as using curved magnets to reduce the air gap) has quantum jumped in the last few years, with optimized motors developed for the massive quadcopter markets. One can now equip an E36/S with a 120+ Watt motor as Tapio Linkosello and Stan Buddenbohm have done and their models, reaching 180-190 meters in 10 seconds.

As Roger notes in the previous SEN, top flyers compete using a 5-seconds motor run – not to poke the over-performance fence sitters (including myself). In fact, a motor’s Wattage is now constrained by the model’s structure (the likelihood of disintegration) and it’s just a question of time before wings and stabs will be carbonized.

Without a Wattage constraint (that might also include a battery capacity limit) E36/S is a pure power event. But as the motors/props of the better flyers are known and easy and not expensive to emulate (a point made by Marcel Amthorfrom Germany), the race will be to build and trim fast models. So a 5/3 seconds regular/flyoff flights would make sense.

Alternatively, E36/S can be evolved into a docile mini event using an energy budget like Q with individual motor runs. For example, with an energy budget of 750 Joules (Watt-seconds), a 75 Watt motor will have a 10 seconds motor run, while a 150 Watt motor will have a 5 seconds motor run. Both models will reach approximately the same altitude if they have the same efficiency.

The static motor’s Wattage could be measured say 4 seconds after the launch button is released with a fully charged battery. (The old static energy test or SET idea.)  Enforcement is a simple as the 30 gram motors in B – a zero score for failing a field check.

In either scenario – exciting or docile, there is no reason to exclude auto rudders. It allows more climb adjustment patterns and clean transitions. ///

Roger,           

for some years now, E36/ F1S has been growing in popularity at an alarming rate here in Europe as well as the USA, a warning to us all about the insidious dangers of simple affordable models and clear, sensible rules. This is simply unacceptable.  We urgently need a heated and devisive debate followed by unpopular rule changes before it's too late.                                Regards, Stuart
