Use of accelerometer in F1A
From Frederic Aberlenc
Some of us use accelerometer to detect the release of towline and open the hook in F1A.
During the acceleration, the aerodynamic forces applied on the model exceeds 20 kg. Consequently, when the line is released, the acceleration of the model is greater than 40 g.
It is easy with an accelerometer to detect this acceleration and to open the hook.
After some discussions in Lost Hills, it appears that many fliers consider this use as illegal.
I would like to open a debate and to obtain a clear answer from the CIAM: Can we use accelerometer for hook opening?
Editor’s comment; Frederic my interpretation is that if it just opens the hook it is definitely OK because it is a non-reversible action, just like a traditional standard hook. Also like the tension activated servo on the hook it is OK because it happens before the flight starts even if it closes the hook when the tension or acceleration reduces if you decide not to launch.
It is possibly bad because it uses invisible electronics, hence witchcraft! :) Although witchcraft is not excluded by the sporting code, hence Black Magic timers
But let’s see what the experts say ?
